2011 is proving to be a phenomenal year for film releases from Walt Disney Pictures! On Friday, Disney Prom was released in theaters nationwide.
Prom…I have mixed feelings about the pivotal event that unites a class of high schoolers for one last night before graduating and stepping out into the world of young adulthood. Although our class had a prom, we had to skirt around the official “no prom” rule my private Christian high school adhered to. A group of parents who believed in the significance of the event helped organize and chaperone our senior prom. While I did not marry the person I went to prom with, I still have many cherished memories, including the friendships I still maintain from that time in my life.
Relive your prom memories with Disney’s take on monumental high school event! Disney Prom follows several intersecting stories leading up to the big night. Here is a brief synopsis from the site:
At “Prom,” every couple has a story and no two are exactly alike. Several intersecting stories unfold at one high school as the big dance approaches; “Prom” portrays the precarious passage from high school to independence as some relationships unravel and others ignite. For Nova Prescott, it’s a battle of wills as she finds herself drawn to the guy who gets in the way of her perfect prom. Fellow seniors Mei and Tyler harbor secrets, while others face all the insecurity and anticipation that surrounds one of high school’s most seminal events. There are hundreds of nights in high school, but there’s only one “Prom.”
Despite the ensemble cast, the actors managed to realistically portray some of the many challenges of high school, particularly as they relate to relationships and prom. Despite the fact that the stories are somewhat predictable, they’re believable. During one of the scenes towards the end of the movie, a fellow blogger and I teared up, which speaks to the authenticity of the actors and the stories. The feel-good movie is definitely geared towards teens and tweens, but I have several friends who would enjoy it.
