Summer is…
Staying up late and sleeping in…(one very often leads to the other)
Bubbles and sandcastles…
Sunsets and starry nights…
S’mores and ice cream…
It’s the last week of school, and we are ready for our best summer ever. In the midst of scheduled activities and summer camp, we’ll have plenty of down time to break away from the structured school routine. Since our summers are often very hot and very dry, we’re always looking for ways to cool off. Water play, an afternoon at the movies, and plenty of frozen treats are our staples for sweating through the summer heat.
If my children could have a smoothie every single day, they would, particularly in the summer when they’re looking for something fresh, fruity, and frozen. While smoothies aren’t terribly time-consuming or difficult to make, it does take some forethought to ensure we have all of the necessary ingredients.
Darifair Farms recently introduced a new line of smoothies and frappes, available in exclusively at select Walmart stores. Made from real fruit and dairy, these drinks contain 190-210 calories, 2.5-3 grams of fat, and provide a good source of protein (9 grams) and calcium (30%). We often purchase ready-made smoothies when we’re on-the-go, so I thought I’d check these out with my kids.
At present, the frozen smoothies are available in Strawberry, Strawberry Banana, and Pineapple Mango varieties. We pulled a couple flavors out the night before to thaw them, and by morning they were ready to drink. Because I am allergic to pineapple, we don’t really have it around our home and our children have not gotten accustomed to the flavor. Both the strawberry and strawberry banana varieties were the favorites in our home.
I personally was excited about the frozen frappes, since very often I frequent our local coffee shop for an ice-blended mocha. Available in Mocha, Caramel, and Chocolate Raspberry, these frappes have a nutrition profile simliar to the smoothies. Mocha was the favorite both with my husband and I although I wish more of the coffee flavor was present.
While I think that ready-made smoothies and frappes are a great alternative for families on-the-go, there are a few things I’d love to see improved as Darifair Farms continues to refine the line.
Sugar: I would like to see the sugar content lowered. At present it is between 32 and 37 grams per seven ounce serving.
Artificial Ingredients: While I think it is wonderful that the smoothies and frappes are made with real fruit and milk, I would like to see the number of artificial ingredients decrease or be eliminated completely.
Dairy: For many families, smoothies are one of the ways their children get important nutrients such as calcium. But more and more we are seeing children and adults who suffer from food allergies. I would love to see either lactose free or a dairy free options in addition to the current line.
The price point is reasonable at just $1.78 per drink. Many comparable brands start at upwards of $3 per drink. For more information about Darifair Farms or to locate a Walmart store that carries these drinks near you, just visit their website.
