As I walked out of CosmetiCare that afternoon, it would have been impossible for anyone on the outside to know that I had just received my first custom peel. Years of intermittent breakouts and inadvertent exposure to the sun resulted in uneven skin tone and hyperpigmentation. Prescription and over-the-counter remedies just didn’t realize the results I wanted in a short amount of time. After meeting with master Esthetician Angel, she was able to evaluate my skin in order to customize my chemical peel.
This post is part of a sponsored campaign with CosmetiCare.
Types of Chemical Peels
CosmetiCare offers several types of chemical peels. Their Cosmelan Peel, which I discussed in depth, is designed to diminish hyper pigmentation. This peel is effective for treating discoloration, melasma, blotchy skin, scarring, and other issues related to skin pigmentation. Large and small areas of skin can be treated effectively.
The VI peel is a treatment designed to address skin damage on the face due to aging, sun exposure, acne, and more. This peel is ideal for all skin types and combines Salicylic Acid and Tricholoracetic Acid and a blend of essential nutrients and moisturizers to address fine lines, wrinkles, uneven tone, and uneven texture.
Each of the above peels can be applied at CosmetiCare by an Esthetician in 30 minutes or less with minimal pain or discomfort. While redness, flaking, and peeling are expected, the downtime is minimal and the results are highly effective.
Custom Chemical Peel
One of the things I appreciate about CosmetiCare is the highly personalized experience I have had with every visit. Angel and I discussed my skin concerns, and then developed a plan that included a custom chemical peel and a custom facial one month later to give my skin the vitalizing boost it needed. The custom chemical peel was performed at CosmetiCare and took about 15 minutes (the entire procedure can be viewed above).
My custom chemical peel removed 4-5 layers of skin with a total downtime of approximately one week. It is very important to seek a professional esthetician who will achieve a controlled peel with minimal side effects. When I left CosmetiCare, my skin had already returned to its normal color/tone and from the outside, it did not appear that anything had been done. My peel was completed on a Wednesday and by Friday, my skin around the mouth had begun to crack and peel. I peeled for a good 3 days and the result was super soft, evenly toned skin.
If you do not have the 7-9 days of downtime that accompany this particular custom chemical peel, Angel and the professionals at CosmetiCare can work with you to achieve your desired skin care goals with minimal downtime.
Custom Chemical Peel Aftercare
After a chemical peel, it is vital that you stay out of the sun. Living in Southern California means we have sun year-round, so I made sure to wear a wide-brimmed hat whenever I stepped outside. During the time when my skin was peeling, I applied Aquaphor to keep my skin moist and hydrated. Angel also instructed me to use a cold water/distilled vinegar soak while I was peeling to help facilitate the healing process. It also felt very soothing on my skin when it began to peel.
No other skin care products or makeup should be applied until the skin has finished peeling. After the skin has finished peeling, diligent use of sunscreen is required to protect the skin. Here is a brief recap how to take care of your skin after a custom chemical peel.
- Apply Aquaphor as needed to keep the skin moist and hydrated.
- Do not peel the skin. If it becomes bothersome, use a pair of scissors to trim the skin that is peeling.
- Avoid the sun, if possible. Use a wide-brimmed hat if you must be out in the sun.
- Use a cold water/vinegar soak as needed to soothe the skin while it is peeling.
- Avoid wearing makeup until the skin has finished peeling.
- Wear sunscreen daily to protect skin.
- Call or text your esthetician for questions or concerns. Be sure to take photos so that you can show your esthetician your concerns.
Benefits of a Chemical Peel
A custom chemical peel can help diminish pigment and past acne scarring. The peel also helps brighten the skin and even out skin tone. Lastly, custom chemical peels can address fine lines, wrinkles, and uneven skin texture. For your specific skin concern, I recommend consulting with a professional.
Chemical Peel Side Effects
When a custom chemical peel is performed by a professional esthetician, there should be minimal to no side effects. In the first few days after a chemical peel, it is common to experience redness and itching. But beyond that, there are no lasting side effects. It is important to be diligent about protecting the skin. I also recommend avoiding the urge to peel the skin yourself. This can lead to scarring and hyperpigmentation.
Before and After Chemical Peel
For years, I spent time and money attempting to even out my skin tone and reduce the hyperpigmented areas of my skin without much success. When I looked at my skin in the mirror about a week after my custom peel, I could not believe how beautiful my skin looked. For the first time in years, I felt comfortable walking out of the house without makeup. The photos shown above have not been edited so that you can see what my skin looked like during the entire process.

Hello Caryn! Once again, great blog! Hyperpigmentation really sucks and it could give a depressive atmosphere to the person undergoing this dilemma. I’m glad you’ve covered this topic. It’s very detailed. People can benefit from this read! This is worth a facebook share!

I find it great that you shared that a person can avail of a chemical peel so that they can treat discoloration and melasma on their skin. With that in mind, I will look for a local spa who can provide this kind of peel and book a session for my sister this weekend. That way, she will look great once she goes on a few job interviews next week.
