Because my kids share a room at present, it’s difficult to choose a theme that works well for both a preschool boy and a toddler girl. My son won’t have pink or princesses in his room, and my daughter won’t have anything to do with cars or items that aren’t pretty and feminine. My challenge is to help inspire a room that’s fun and creative for both of them.
Since we love to craft, I decided to take our own spin on Monogram Art. With just a few items we found at our local Walmart, we created adorable wood plaques that can be hung over each of their beds. Since summer is filled with parties and gatherings, you could easily create these to use as party favors or table decor and at the end of the party, each guest could take one home. The entire project (each completed plaque) can be created for less than $10. Since we already had the paint, glue, and scissors, I spent less than $5 plus tax.
Monogram Art (via Walmart, modified)
Step 1: Gather your supplies
1. Kids Craft Acrylic Paint (I recommend 2 colors)
2. Plaid Large Wood Letter
3. Plaid Large Rectangle Plaque
4. Scissors
5. Ruler
6. Paintbrushes
7. Craft Glue
8. Craft Ribbon
Step 2: Paint plaque and letter
Be sure to use several coats of paint and allow to dry completely
Step 3: Decorate with craft ribbon
Wrap the ribbon vertically around the plaque and finish with a bow at the top. Alternatively, you could create a bow (as I did with my son’s letter) and use a glue gun to secure it in place
Step 4: Glue painted letter to plaque and allow to dry
Modification: The original craft uses craft foam which we omitted.
Monogram Art is a simple project that doesn’t take a lot of time or effort. The result looks incredible and can be used as a gift, a party favor, or a personal touch to a child’s room.
Disclosure: I participate in the Walmart Moms program and am compensated for my time and honest opinions.

Great way to find a balance between the two! Animals are a great neutral theme for boys and girls too!
