As the weather continues to warm up, it’s very tempting to want to stay inside. In fact, I’m in the process of co-authoring an e-book and my section is all about cool, creative ways to get children outside. With technology competing for our children’s attention, it’s important that I am purposeful about getting them outside to play and learn about their environment, particularly their natural surroundings.
Moving from Los Angeles to Orange County was difficult for this city girl, but I knew in the long run it was best for our children. We are surrounded by lush, well-maintained parks and open spaces for our children to get out, move around, and explore. But this isn’t the case in many parts of the country. Having lived in Los Angeles most of my life, I saw the decline of our local parks due to lack of funding for upkeep and necessary aesthetic and/or safety improvements.
For the 4th year in a row, Coca-Cola has launched America Is Your Park, a campaign to inspire families to be active outdoors this summer. Through July 15th, families can vote for their favorite park to receive a recreation grant. Coca-Cola aspires to get 3 million people moving this summer. The more people move, the more they can earn votes for their favorite park. Here is how it works:
1. Register at Coke.com/Parks and link your Foursquare and MapMyFitness accounts
2. Earn 10 votes each day by logging 20 minutes or more of physical activity
3. Earn 5 votes per day by checking in to a park via Foursquare
4. Earn 1 vote per day by visiting Coke.com/Park via your computer or smartphone
The last weekend to vote is July 13th and 14th, and on those days, votes will be doubled.
The three parks that receive the most votes will receive the following grant amounts:
1st Place: $100,000
2nd Place: $50,000
3rd Place: $25,000
An additional $15,00 grant will be awarded to a randomly selected park that has placed in the top 25 parks receiving the most votes
What do you and your family enjoy doing at the park? Skateboarding? Playing sports? Hide & Seek? Think about it because at the end, you’ll want to get creative for a fun outdoor giveaway! Our kids are still young so they enjoy the swings, slide, and simply running around to get their wiggles out. And when the weather isn’t terribly warm, you’ll find us picnicking on the grass under a shady tree!
All summer long, Coca-Coal will giveaway fitness activity trackers and up to 100,000 soccer balls online and at major events across the country. We love to go Wild Blueberry picking, the season has just started! Largest berries yet, must be all the rain we’ve had.
Our favorite way to get outside is to go swimming. However, our most frequent outdoor activity is tennis. We do this several times a week.
