Like many little girls, I found myself enchanted by the story of Cinderella at a young age. I adored how she embraced kindness and courage and refused to let her present circumstances determine her future. She never stopped dreaming or believing, and those lessons of strength of character have inspired many young girls.
With thousands of iterations of this classic folktale, perhaps the most beautiful is Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella, which debuted on Broadway in 2013. The story is familiar and this particular musical draws inspiration from the French version by Charles Perrault which tells the story of a young woman forced to live a life of servitude by her evil stepmother. When a Fairy Godmother transforms Cinderella into a princess, she sets out to the local ball where she meets her Prince. Weaving contemporary elements into the story with classics like the glass slippers and a pumpkin-turned-carriage, Cinderella fights for her dreams and helps the prince realize his own as she opens up his eyes to the injustice around him.
Featuring music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, a new book by Douglas Carter Beane and an original book by Oscar Hammerstein II, CINDERELLA will debut at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts on April 19th, 2016.
