The back-to-school rush is here, and now that we’ve finally received our official school supply list, we’re busy shopping for last minute essentials and accessories in order to prepare for my son’s first day of school. Shopping early typically means access to the best selection, particularly when it comes to things like backpacks and lunch-boxes. My kids have pretty specific requests when it comes to characters and styles which is why I love that my local Walmart had quite a few options to choose from.
Shopping for back-to-school supplies and accessories was exciting as a child, and I still see that joy and anticipation in my kids. Since many kids don’t want to trade in their summer adventures and lax schedules for routine and the discipline of learning, I try to make the new school year as joyful as possible by giving them freedom of expression and creativity when it comes to back-to-school clothing and accessories.
Much like previous years, character-inspired clothing, shoes, and accessories is a huge trend. Thankfully, Walmart had backpacks, lunch-boxes, pencil cases, folders, and more inspired by summer blockbusters like Guardians of the Galaxy and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as well as more timeless kids’ classics and favorites like Super Mario Bros. and Disney Princesses. The challenge was asking my children to pick just one style!
While I definitely think that it’s perfectly acceptable to mix and match, my kids insisted that they have coordinating backpacks and lunch-boxes. My daughter picked out a Disney Princess ensemble which feature classic princesses on the light-up backpack ($12.88) and the lunch-box ($5.48). The backpack is a bit big for her, but she insisted on this particular style and the padded adjustable shoulder straps will allow her to grow into it. While offering quite a bit of room, the backpack is still light enough to be easy on her back (at present she’s only carrying drawing supplies and a doll inside). The lunchbox is also lightweight and roomy.
If your kids like to coordinate their accessories, I highly recommend checking out Walmart’s character backpacks with lunch kit. For just $12.88, you’ll get both the backpack and the lunch-box, which attaches via velcro to the backpack. Not only is this a cost-effective way to shop, it ensures the items match and helps kids keep track of their items (we lost at least 2 lunch-boxes last school year). Walmart offers a varied selection of characters including Disney Princess, Disney Fairies, Minnie Mouse, Spider-Man, Justice League, and Ironman. You’ll also find non-character designs, some of which also include a pencil case. The only limitation to these combo accessories is finding the character your child wants.
To finish off our accessory shopping, we picked up coordinating folders ($0.97 each!) for each of the kids along with the remainder of my son’s school supplies. For under $20 each, our kids are now completely ready for the new school year. If you haven’t finished up your back-to-school shopping, you can still visit your local Walmart store or shop online for even more styles.
