Celebrate the 4th of July With a DIY Ice Cream Bar!

Posted by Caryn Bailey Leave a Comment

With warm weather heating up our part of the country, we decided to cool off with ice cream this holiday weekend.  If we’re just hanging out at home, ice cream, chocolate syrup, and whipped cream will suffice.  But since this weekend is all about celebrations, remembrance, and memory making, why not put together an ice cream bar so guests can create their own sundaes?

Here is what you’ll need (variations encouraged):

Bowls (I picked up a few red and blue bowls on clearance at Walmart)

Spoons

Ice cream (chocolate chip cookie dough is my favorite!)

Whipped Cream

Sprinkles

Chocolate Syrup

Maraschino Cherries

Fresh Fruit

Nuts

Crushed Cookies

Root Beer (for floats)

Our ice cream bar made up the dessert part of our 4th of July celebration.  I made a special trip to a Walmart with a large grocery section in order to see how many items I could find.  I picked up two tablecovers in red and blue to make clean-up quick and easy.  I also purchased sorbet for my son, fresh fruit, whipped cream (although you could make your own with whipping cream and powdered sugar), cherries, and 8 bowls I found on clearance.  The total cost before tax was $29.47 which is a great deal, considering all the items purchased.  If I had to purchase ice cream, sprinkles, and syrup, I might have opted to purchase fewer bowls or omit them altogether to stay under my budget of $30.

After everything was set-up, we lined the  kids up to scoop the ice cream and then had them go through and add their own toppings. They enjoyed all of the different options available to make their own sundaes and the only thing I would have changed was offering more healthy toppings.
