You’re never too old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book and read with a child.
I started reading to my son when he was just an infant, in part due to all of the literature I had read detailing the benefits he could reap such as building communication and vocabulary skills. Reading also became a way for my son and I to bond before naps and at bedtime. Despite the fact that we still read nearly every single day, it came as a surprise to me this past year when he began reading books all by himself.
Every year, on Dr. Seuss’s birthday, the National Education Association inspires a nation of readers through its Read Across America Day. The day is now nationally recognized in many schools and the goal is to promote literacy across the country. While our son’s school doesn’t seem to be having a special event on March 3rd, many communities across the country will celebrate by bringing kids and books together. Be sure to remember to check your local library and community center for Read Across America celebrations.
In order to continue to foster a love for reading within our children, we encourage them to check out different books at our local library and allow them to pick out a few books during the school book fair. My son is at an age where he can read to himself but he still enjoys being read to so we like to incorporate both reading activities most days of the week. If you’re looking for some fun ways to celebrate during Read Across America Day, download the free printable activities available on Seussville.com.
Dr. Seuss was absolutely brilliant and I have fond memories of reading his books with my mother as a child. We introduced favorites like The Cat in the Hat at an early age because Dr. Seuss’ writing incorporates imagination and rhyming to build literacy. In partnership with Walmart, you can get a great deal on Dr. Seuss’ books beginning this week. Beginner books will be on sale for $5 (regularly priced at $8.99) and board books will be on sale for $3.50 (regularly priced at $4.99). Whether you’re looking to add to your home library or seeking out a gift for a friend, these books are likely to become classics and ones you’ll read with your children over and over again.
Celebrate Read Across America on March 3rd, 2014. And for more information about Walmart’s special pricing on Dr. Seuss’ books, visit their website.
