My children, particularly my daughter, get wide-eyed when they see the magic of bubbles as they float through the air. And although not “magic,” the science behind the bubble is quite fascinating. Bubblefest, the annual Spring Break event at the Discovery Science Center, will amaze, educate, and immerse children in a festival of bubbles.
The two-week festival merges science and entertainment, offering kids the opportunity to get hands-on with bubbles both big and small. The highlight of the event each year is the Mega Bubblefest Laser Show, which stars international bubble scientist Deni Yang as he demonstrates the beauty, versatility, and wonder of bubbles. The 30 minute show uses high-tech lights, lasers, and special effects to create everything from smoking and spinning bubbles to bouncing bubbles and bubbles in all shapes and sizes. During each show, a few guests are chosen to be encapsulated within a giant bubble.
As part of the center’s emphasis on children getting “hands-on,” there will be an outdoor festival which will include an inflatable play zone, water spheres, and interactive science zones for kids to experiment with their own bubble creations. As a parent, I appreciate the fact that these activities help children learn about the science and math behind the bubble. Some of the concepts explored include surface tension, elasticity, geometry, and air pressure.
For those wishing to get a photo inside one of Yang’s record-holding bubble creations, stop by “Me in a Bubble.”
All of the activities related to Bubblefest are included in the price of admission, except of the Mega Bubblefest Show, which requires a separate ticket ($5 for members, $7 for non-members).
For those wishing to catch both the Mega Bubblefest Show and the Indiana Jones exhibit, the Discovery Science Center will offer an all-inclusive spring break package. For showtimes, tickets, and more information, just visit the Discovery Science Center.
