{Consideration provided by Bold Girlz and Union Market at Kaleidoscope}
From a very young age, my mother consistently modeled etiquette and manners. During our weekend shopping trips, she would help me pick out clothes that accented my beauty without compromising my modesty. I picked up table manners and practiced appropriate communication skills around the dinner table. So much of what she taught me was done side-by-side, and I appreciated and respected her ability to weave important lessons into our everyday life.
As I raise my little girl to be a respectful young woman, I’m constantly thinking about ways to model the same behaviors that my mother did. And yet, my daughter’s bold personality can make it challenging to teach etiquette and social graces. Sometimes, I find that it takes a simple change in the delivery of these messages to resonate with my daughter.
Bold Girls – Etiquette for Girls
Last week, the two of us attended a Bold Girlz Superhero Etiquette Workshop at Kaleidoscope in Mission Viejo. Founded by Cheryl Beck, Bold Girlz seeks to empower girls through fashion and encourage them to give back. Through their fashion shows, spa parties, and etiquette training, they seek to build self-esteem, provide a place where girls can express themselves (original), inspire girls to give back (loving), and instill empowerment (daring).
I never actually took manners/etiquette-specific classes, but I imagine their appeal to children is lacking. Bold Girlz female-led Superhero Etiquette Workshop teaches kids manners and etiquette in a fun, engaging environment. Each class is an hour and a half and teaches table manners, how to hold silverware, proper meetings and introductions, sitting/walking and kindness/respect. The class is taught by “Superhero” teen girls, which resonates well with younger girls like my daughter who are looking up to them. Knowing how to act in a variety of situations can help foster a young girl’s confidence and self-esteem which is why these workshops resonate so well with parents and their daughters.
Bold Girlz is known for hosting fashion shows and birthday parties. Along with selling on-trend apparel, Bold Girls features a stage, fashion runway and a private party space where kids learn runway basics and put on a fun fashion show at the end of class for their parents. Their parties can include hair and makeup services as well as jewelry tattoos and neon hair extensions.
As I sat observing the class, I realized that there are gaps in my own knowledge of manners and etiquette. Perhaps the most interesting thing I learned was how to arrange my silverware in a way that communicates to my server whether or not I’m done with my meal. The class is fun and interactive and each girl has an opportunity to participate and be involved in the class. Classes are $25 and occur evenings during the week.
In addition to Bold Girlz Superhero Etiquette Workshops, girls can also choose to have their birthday party in their private space. Choose from fashion themed parties, rock star parties, and spa parties.
Make it a Bold Girlz Playdate!
While learning about etiquette and manners was fun for my daughter, she loved participating in the class with one of our friends’ daughters. It helped her feel comfortable and confident participating in the class. Since classes are held evenings during the week, why not make it a Bold Girlz Playdate? Union Market recently opened at Kaleidoscope and features a hip new space with an open-market feel.
The market houses a handful of restaurants and boutiques, some of which cannot be found anywhere else. The space also includes a variety of activities for families including a bean bag toss and ping pong. The food is absolutely delightful! Think fresh, DIY Poke Bowls, handcrafted milk teas and made-to-order, hand-shaped pastas. I would visit Union Market just for the food! Despite the gourmet flair surrounding the eateries, there are plenty of kid-friendly options (my kids LOVE Market 2 Plate).

I love the way Kaleidoscope has evolved to become a place for families to gather with unique experiences that can’t be found anywhere else. Families can enjoy watch a movie, play laser tag, express their creativity with a hand-painted ceramic, or climb and get their energy out at the indoor play space on-site.
