“Collect moments, not things,” is one of my favorite quotes and a perspective I strive to live out with my kids daily. To try to curb the constant messages of commercialism that they come in contact with daily, I teach and model generosity and stewardship, so they understand that life and love are more than the things we possess. The message that love can’t, nor shouldn’t be bought is a powerful one, and I was hopeful that Momentum Pictures’ latest film Bling would engage and inspire kids to think beyond the “ring.”
Produced by DigiArt, Bling follows the story of theme park mechanic Sam, who plans to marry the girl of his dreams. On his quest to find the best ring and plot out an epic proposal, his plans are thwarted by a supervillain. Thus begins an adventure to reclaim his ring, the girl he loves and the city which is under the threat of destruction.
The story is unique, with a message that most parents hope their children will grasp by the time they are old enough to date and find a life partner. Ideally suited for the older child/tween, Bling features non-stop action and humor that reminded me of Despicable Me. The film originated in South Korea, produced by animation studio Digiart, thus audiences may not be accustomed to the style of animation. Overall, the film was entertaining and strived to weave in some positive messages about love superseding fame or fortune.
In honor of the film’s release, here are some free Bling printable activities.
Bling is currently showing in select theaters nationwide and available on Google Play.
