The moment I began stringing letters together to form words, and words to form sentences, opened up an imaginative, literary world. It was rare to find me without a book-in-hand, and my memories of sitting next to my mother as she read to me are fuzzy. I always preferred getting lost in made-up worlds and stories, and by early-elementary school, I was already reading works by Roald Dahl, Beverly Cleary and Judy Blume.
The author who gained notoriety for classics like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and James and the Giant Peach has inspired Disney’s latest fantasy adventure film, The BFG. Uniting the talents of Roald Dahl, Walt Disney and Steven Spielberg, the film follows the story of a young girl and the Big Friendly Giant who introduces her to the wonders and dangers of Giant Country where the likes of Bloodbottler and Fleshlumpeater seek to devour humans. After her initial fears of the BFG, 10-year-old Sophie learns that he is gentle and charming and together they discover the magic and mystery of dreams. As Sophie’s presence in Giant Country becomes increasingly troublesome, the two depart for London to warn the queen of the man-eating giants invading the human world.
In honor of the film’s 4th of July weekend release, I’m sharing a handful of fun The BFG Printables and Activity Sheets.
