My children are not your typical picky, I-only-want-snacks kids, and I only credit that to my persistence with them as babies and tots. I’ve always been passionate about nutrition, and because I wanted my children to grow up eating AND enjoying fresh fruits and vegetables, I never gave up…even when it was difficult and it seemed impossible. With convenience foods on the rise and parents’ increasingly busy schedules, the question begs…how do we get our children to eat healthier and what does that look like?
Last week, actress Kelly Packard took some time to share her best tips for healthy, kid-friendly meals, drinks, and snacks. With healthy eating and milk consumption on the decline, Packard shares her creative ways to integrate more nutrients into mealtime, how to make milk more appealing, particularly with kids, and her best healthy swaps for snacks and beverages.
The daily recommendation for milk consumption in kids is 3, 8-ounce glasses, and I have had to rethink the drinks I’m serving my kids to place a greater emphasis on getting them to drink more milk. Because there are so many options out there (juice, juice drinks, soda, etc.), children who skimp on milk also miss out on important nutrients like Calcium and Vitamin D, essential for growth and development. They also have higher BMIs, which can contribute to morbidity and mortality from future chronic diseases.
One of Packard’s recommendations to make milk more palatable was a product called MilkSplash. This zero calorie milk flavoring is available in 5 kid-friendly flavors and one squeeze is all that is necessary to flavor the milk. While I definitely think the concept of making milk more palatable so children will drink it is noteworthy, I’d really like to see the company introduce a product that is free from preservatives and artificial flavorings/colorings (and I’ve heard that a natural version is in the works). So for now, our family will personally be incorporating Packard’s other ways to eat, drink, and snack healthier.
MilkSplash is available at your local Walmart.
