How to Choose the Best Laptop for Students
- Consider how your student will use his/her laptop: Storage and OS capabilities are key factors to think about when purchasing a laptop. Will your student use the laptop to surf the web, check email, and network with friends? Or will he/she require a more substantial laptop that allows for multi-tasking, photo editing, and content creation (including videos). Use will determine whether or not a student requires a high resolution screen, a fast processor, more system memory, and a larger hard drive.
- Consider the look, feel, and weight of the laptop: Design is important, particularly if the student will be transporting the laptop frequently between class and home or dorm. Durability is key and a laptop should be able to withstand day-to-day use. The best way to determine the practical functionality of a laptop is to go into a store like Best Buy to test out a variety of models.
- Consider memory and storage needs: Laptop memory and storage requirements are largely based on utility. If your student plans to use advanced software to edit photos or create movies, opt for a laptop with at least 8 GB of memory with the option to expand the RAM.
- Consider the battery life: Battery life can vary from a few hours to 12 or more hours. Determine how much time you require to be cord-free before making a decision on battery life.
- Consider screen type, size, display, and resolution: Does your student prefer a touch screen? How large of a screen is ideal based on utility? Resolution and display are also key factors to consider, particularly the laptop will be used for streaming movies and/or gaming.
