Best Indoor Gardening Tips

Two weeks ago, I started my very first indoor garden using Miracle-Gro’s AeroGarden 3SL.  While I’ve had some success with outdoor gardens, this is my first indoor gardening experience and I’m honestly taken aback by how quickly the 3 Heirloom Lettuce Seed Pods sprouted. The initial set-up of this soil-free garden was quick, easy, and very straightforward. Maintenance is minimal and simply includes monitoring water levels, adding Liquid Nutrients every 2 weeks (a light will turn on indicating it is time to add additional nutrients), and harvesting at the appropriate time.

Here is a photo of our plants’ growth at 13 days.

Since these Heirloom Salad Greens sprout quickly, they’ll need to be harvested at around the 3 week mark. If this is your first time growing an indoor garden, I recommend referencing the manual included with each seed pod, which will provide harvesting instructions. For salad greens like hours, harvesting simply involves removing whole leaves by cutting at the base of the leaf with scissors or shears.

For someone like me who has never really had a green thumb, the entire process of growing an indoor garden with Miracle-Gro’s AeroGarden 3SL has been seamless. To further ensure success, here are 5 Easy Indoor Gardening Tips to extend the life of your plants and yield numerous, plentiful harvests:

1. Set your Lamp Hood to the lowest position whenever initiating the growth of new seed pods and always keep the Grow Lights as close to the plants as possible. Plants should not actually touch Grow Lights, which can burn the leaves. The recommended distance between each plant and the Grow Light is 1-2 inches.

2. Monitor water levels and consider changing out the water in the bowl once per month with the addition of plant nutrients.

3. Prune plants regularly by trimming back leaves just above a new leaf system. Trimming will also ensure that faster growing plants do not block the light source from reaching the other plants.  Also consider pruning larger plants from the top so that the Grow Light can remain in the lowest possible position, thereby exposing the plants to consistent light.

4. When harvesting, avoid taking more than one-third of a plant at one time.

5. Monitor your plants (including the underside of the leaves) for bugs regularly, which can be damaging to plants. Bugs can be removed by spraying them with water.

In addition to these 5 indoor gardening tips, remember to carefully consider the placement of your AeroGarden 3 SL. The Grow Light remains on for 16 hours each day, so you’ll want to consider placing it in a room that won’t disrupt your sleep.  We placed ours downstairs since our bedrooms are upstairs. Some plants prefer cooler temperatures and may need to be placed away from a window with direct sunlight. Each Seed Pod includes a set of directions that can guide you on the specific growing requirements for each plant.
