In between hiking the hoodoos and seeking reprieve from the warm Southern California sun at our local beach club, my kids have been unwavering in their summer reading efforts. Mondays are “library day” in our family, and over the past 2 months, each of my kids have been reading 2-3 books per week! Each of my kids have diverse reading interests, but they each love series because they can follow a set of characters and immerse themselves in imaginary worlds, propelled by what’s to come.
With just a few weeks before the start of the new school year, we have been shopping for new clothes, finishing up their back-to-school supplies list, and organizing extracurricular activities and schedules. We have also introduced a few new books into our library, specifically focused around Fall and the new school year. Our back-to-school conversations begin mid-summer so that my kids begin to understand that our lack of a consistent bedtime and night swimming will soon have to be halted. If your child needs a little assistance or encouragement as we approach the new year, here are 7 books to help kids transition back to school.
- The Teacher’s Pet by Anica Mrose Rissi: Mr. Stricter’s classroom has a big problem. He had no way of knowing that the one tadpole he allowed his class to keep would turn into a hippo. This story of a class pet gone-wrong is reminiscent of Miss Nelson is Missing and The Teacher From the Black Lagoon.
- Fall is For School by Robert Neubecker: Neubecker’s sequel to Winter is for Snow, once again tells the story of two siblings, each enthusiastic over opposing seasons. Sister loves fall, school and everything that is tied to the season. Brother’s reluctance over the end of summer soon grows as he sees the start of a new season and all of the adventures that will ensue.
- The Scariest Book Ever by Bob Shea: Ideal for Fall and the coming Halloween season, this books features an alarmist ghost narrator who’s one page away from a fright. And while anything might pop out of that deep black hole, none of the animal characters are scary.
- Super Saurus Saves Kindergarten by Deborah Underwood: Young Arnold has an overactive imagination. When he has decided that the evil genius Zorgo is disguised as Mr. Zachary, he resolves to stop him. After all, he is Super Saurus.
- Beatrice Zinker, Upside Down Thinker by Shelley Johannes: This first book in the series details the story of a spirited third-grader who sees the world in her own way. In fact, she does her best thinking upside-down…hanging from trees or doing handstands. When her best friend arrives with a new friend on the first day of school, Beatrice is determined to get her friendship back to normal.
- Dog Days of School by Kelly DiPucchio: It’s a dog’s life for Norman, Charlie’s dog. He spends his days longing on the couch or playing fetch while Charlie has to do homework. When Charlie makes a wish to be a dog instead of a boy, things get chaotic, proving that the grass is not always greener on the other side.
- Ready for School Murphy? by Brendan Murphy: Murphy does not want to go to school. His nerves are heightened, but no amount of made-up excuses can convince his dad to let him stay home. Until he finds out…it is Saturday!
