Creating family traditions is something I’ve strived to do since my kids were infants. I have so many fond memories of outings and activities we did in my own family and I want my children to have those same feelings of nostalgia as they grow up. Perhaps what I love most about Fall in Southern California is the abundance of activities designed to bring families together.
A tradition we started several years ago was an annual Fall trip to The Pumpkin Patch at Irvine Park Railroad. This is hands-down the best pumpkin patch in Orange County, not only for its expansive selection of pumpkins big and small, but for the sheer number of kid-friendly activities. This year marks the 8th annual Pumpkin Patch, which takes over Irvine Regional Park in the ultimate Fall family festival. Here is what you can expect this year!
Pumpkins Galore! What is a pumpkin patch without pumpkins? (and lots of them). Pick your perfect pumpkin or, take a guess as to how much their giant pumpkin weighs. If you’re correct, you’ll take it home! (please visit the Pumpkin Patch for more information).
Take a walk through the not-too-spooky Haunted House
Find your way out of the Giant Hay Maze
Pan for gold and see if it is your lucky day!
Turn that sugar cookie into an edible piece of art!
Ride a tractor ’round the park or…
Race a kid-sized version against a friend.
Along with the above-themed activities, children can play games at the Halloween-themed carnival, get a spooktacular transformation by the park’s face painters (who are probably the best I’ve seen anywhere!), or enjoy a bag of popcorn while watching the historic train carry passengers throughout the park. Additionally, all of your favorite park activities will be open including the Pony Rides, Wheel Fun Rentals (for paddle boat and bike rentals), and the Orange County Zoo.
This weekend, the zoo will host their annual Zoo-tacular which includes trick-or-treating, a scavenger hunt, kids crafts, and face painting. We particularly love this event because it is one of the only opportunities throughout the year to see animals receive a treat-filled pumpkin. Since it’s Halloween, be sure to dress your child up since the first 10o children in costume will receive a special gift.
We have easily spent a Saturday at Irvine Regional Park relaxing and enjoying all of the activities offered. Because the Pumpkin Patch is outfitted with Halloween decor, it makes for some beautiful family photo opps.
