My dad loved the music he deemed “the oldies,” rock and roll from the 60s and 70s. So many of the songs he had on repeat on his record player were written by singer-songwriter and composer Carole King. With a discography that encompasses more than 100 songs, King is hailed as the most successful American female songwriter in the latter half of the 20th century. This Fall, the story of her life will be performed on stage when Beautiful – The Carole King Musical debuts at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts.
Beautiful – The Carole King Musical
Beautiful is a jukebox musical that tells the story of Carole King’s early life and career and features a number of songs she wrote, some in partnership with her late first husband Gerry Coffin. The musical was written by Tony and Academy Award-nominee Douglas McGrath and opened on Broadway at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre in 2014. To date, the musical is the highest grossing production in this theatre’s history. Additionally, the Original Broadway Cast Recording of Beautiful – The Carole King Musical won the 2015 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album.
Originally from Brooklyn, Carole King began her career as a teenager as she struggled to enter the record business. In her twenties she meets her husband and co-writer Gerry Goffin as her career begins to flourish. Many of the songs she wrote became hits for the biggest artists in rock and roll including The Shirelles and The Righteous Brothers.
King’s rise to stardom was not an easy one, and in the midst of the crumbling of her marriage, she finds her true voice. Beautiful tells King’s story in a way that celebrates her talent and accomplishments including her early collaboration with Goffin, her relationship with fellow writers and friends Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, and her ultimate accomplishment as one of the most successful solo acts in music history. The musical features an array of songs written by King and Goffin as well as Mann and Weil including I Feel The Earth Move, One Fine Day, You’ve Got a Friend, and (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman.
