Back to school outfits are something my kids always need. They’re also something I always forget about until the last minute! I walked into my local Walmart last week and realized just how quickly the new school year had snuck up on us. The entire front of our store was filled with back to school items, and I realized that despite the fact that it was only the first week of August, I was already behind. With public schools moving up their start dates into early August, I’ve had to remind myself to begin shopping, even if our 90+ degree temperatures suggest we should really be at the pool.
My son’s growing independence is reflected in his latest choice of back to school outfits and the autonomy he asserts while shopping for school supplies. I pause for a moment, torn between contentment that I’ve raised such a creative, insightful, confident little boy and longing for him to be my baby again. Back to school rouses an array of emotions, and despite the bittersweetness of this moment, my hope is that both of my children look forward to this new year with joyful anticipation at all they will learn this year.
Back to School Outfits at Walmart
My parents always approached the new year as a celebration of sorts, and shopping for new clothes and shoes was one of my favorite memories with them. I’ve continued this tradition of shopping for back to school outfits with my children starting with the always-important first day of school outfit.
When my kids start school, it will technically still be Summer, so my son decided that he will be living in shorts for the first several weeks. He picked out a pair of Faded Glory Solid Cargo Shorts in Dark Navy. Available in 5 different colors, these shorts are versatile enough to wear with a t-shirt, a polo, or a dress shirt. The 100% cotton fabric is soft and breathable and the shorts feature 2 cargo pockets and 2 side pockets to store boy things…like rocks (oh the things they hide in their pants!). Perhaps the best feature of these shorts is the adjustable waist band which helps increase the amount of time kids can wear these shorts. They retail for $9.88 but I was able to purchase them for $5!
My son lives in t-shirts irrespective of the weather, so while I did gently suggest that his first day of school outfit should be a bit dressier, we compromised by purchasing Faded Glory’s Short Sleeve Woven Shirt with Graphic Tee. At just under $10 this combo is a steal! Walmart offers 12 style combinations for back to school outfits which include a Graphic Tee and a Short Sleeve Woven Shirt. Wear each individually or the 2 as a set…the result is that your child will have 3 different outfits with this combo.
Dressing my daughter in back to school outfits has always been more complicated, attributed both to her personality and her gender. Style is very important to her, but she always wants to feel comfortable. When she isn’t in shorts, she prefers leggings and our local Walmart had an expansive selection of patterned and embellished leggings. We finally decided on a pair of Black Soot Foil Print Leggings from 365 Kids. They’re available in 2 different colors and feature a soft, cozy stretch jersey fabric. At just under $5, we picked up several pairs to mix and match with short and long-sleeved tees.
To complete my daughter’s outfit, we picked out a Rinestudded Pocket Tee from Hanes. The shirt is made from soft cotton and features a front pocket and a simple, elegant rhinestone embellishment. I like how Hanes elevated the style of a simple tee by adding the sparkle that every girl loves. This shirt is currently on sale for $3!
My total price for both kids’ back to school outfits after tax was $24.66! What I personally appreciate about shopping at Walmart is that I don’t have to dig through racks to find a great deal. Each of the items I purchased were on conventional racks, making it easy to find the styles and colors my kids wanted in each of their sizes.
Back-to-school shopping can quickly become a large expense. Walmart’s everyday low prices and rollbacks make it easy and affordable to shop for the items you need for the new school year.
