A few times a year, I spend a couple of hours sorting through my kids’ clothes to pull out anything that is overly worn, too small, or “out-of-style,” in preparation for the coming season. With the new school year set to begin in just one week, I realized that I had spent quite a bit of time and money on my son’s wardrobe and in those few short months, my daughter grew out of most of her clothing! I don’t typically spend excessive amounts of money on my children’s clothing for this very reason. Plus, in any given day my kids could be painting, kicking a soccer ball around, or playing in mud playgrounds, so the likelihood that an outfit will rip or stain is high. Fortunately, Walmart has really expanded their apparel section to include a diverse selection of quality-made, on-trend, clothing that won’t break the bank.
Even at four, my daughter is beginning to pick out her own outfits, asserting her personality and unique sense of preschool style. Characters are still an important part of her world, and like most children in preschool and elementary school, dictate everything from choice in clothes and shoes to backpacks, lunch boxes, and other school accessories. As I mentioned earlier this Summer in a post on Walmart’s Corporate Blog, trends this year will focus on blockbuster films like Guardians of the Galaxy, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Frozen while incorporating more timeless characters like Mario from Super Mario Bros. and Minnie Mouse.
In addition to this enduring trend, 2014 is all about the bling, particularly when it comes to preschool girls’ style. The girls’ section at our local Walmart offered an expansive selection of embellished tees and tanks, sparkling glitter pants, and bejeweled leggings. The first outfit I put together for my daughter features a Faded Glory Girls Tie Side 2fer Tee paired with Jordache Boot-Cut Jeans in Indigo Glitter. My daughter actually picked out two of these tees from Faded Glory because she loved the lace trim and patterning on the underlying top. Since the lace is off the skin, it doesn’t itch or irritate her skin like many laced fabrics. The jeans are durably made with a cotton-blend denim and feature an adjustable waistband (perfect for getting the maximum wear out of these jeans). One of the reasons why I even considered purchasing these jeans was the fact that the glitter did not rub off on my hands when I tested it out at the store. These jeans are an adorable staple item that can be paired with a variety of tees and tops throughout the school year. Total outfit price: $18.94 (plus tax).
Prints have always been a mainstay trend, and this year, stores are evoking a bit of nostalgia into their styles by bringing back plaids and polka dots. My daughter loves dressing up, but because she is very active, she needed some skirts with built-in shorts like this Garanimals Plaid Scooter in pink. The ruffle skirt features a comfy elastic waistband, and during the cooler months, you can pair it with leggings. This is my favorite piece from all of the clothing we purchased and I paired it with Faded Glory’s Short Sleeve Henley in Pink. Faded Glory has become one of our favorite brands at Walmart and this shirt, which is made from 100% cotton, is very comfortable and breathable. Because I find myself constantly cutting tags off my kids’ clothing, I appreciate that this shirt is tag-free. Pick up this Henley in one of 8 colors, which features a beautiful, delicate crystal embellishment across the top. Total outfit price: $8.97 (plus tax).
Color-blocking and mix ‘n matching themes are two trends that continue to be realized in fashion. The last outfit I put together for my daughter features Faded Glory’s Girls Tie Side 2fer Tee in Black Soot paired with black embellished leggings. Leggings are another staple wardrobe piece for my daughter because they are comfortable and extremely versatile. In addition to wearing them as a stand-alone piece, she can also add them to skirts and dresses during the cooler months. Total outfit price: $10 (plus tax).
The total price for all 3 outfits was just under $40 which is incredible, considering we can mix and match all of these pieces to create additional outfits. If you haven’t visited the apparel section at your local Walmart, you’ll likely be pleasantly surprise with the improvements in quality and on-trend styles. If your local store doesn’t carry the size or style you’re looking for, you can always visit Walmart.com for a broader assortment of apparel items.
