Apple Stores Offer Free Youth Programs Including Summer Filmmaking Camps

Posted by Caryn Bailey 1 Comment

Information provided by Apple.

Do you have an aspiring filmmaker?  A child that enjoys technology, music, videos or other types of visual media?  Next week, Apple will launch a series of free youth programs called Apple Camp. Designed for children ages 8 to 12, they’ll learn how to shoot their own footage, create an original song in GarageBand using an iPad, and put it together in iMovie using a Mac. The workshops are free, but filling up quickly!

Apple Camp

Here is what parents and children can expect this summer at Apple Camp:

Day One:

During this 1 1/2 hour class, children will get an introduction to the basics of moviemaking and will create a storyboard, an original soundtrack using GarageBand, and prepare for shooting footage outside the store overnight or inside the store.  Day One includes an optional one hour Parents Workshop that will focus on using and setting parental controls on the Mac.

Day Two

This class offers children an introduction to iMovie and will provide instruction on how to use a Mac to import and edit movie footage, incorporate stills and music.  At the end of the class, children will create a film.

Day Three

The last class in the series offers children an opportunity to showcase their movies to their parents, relatives and friends during a Film Festival. At the end of the class, they will be able to take their completed movies home.

*While Apple will provide the tools needed to create a film, parents are encouraged to have their child bring their Mac, digital camera or digital video camera, and earphones so that they are familiarized with their own equipment.

Apple Youth Programs

This is the first I’ve heard of Apple Camp and it looks awesome.  I personally love that Apple is offering free programs like these to teach and inspire children. If your children are a bit younger, be sure to sign up to receive notifications regarding Field Trips to the Apple Store. During the field  trip, children can create something in the store using Macs and iPads or bring in a project they’ve already created.
