One of my most memorable experiences as a child were the sleep away summer camps I attended in my tween and teen years. Those weeks away taught me some of life’s most important lessons, and the friendships that arose are still impressed upon my heart. As we draw near to the end of the school year and map our our summer plans, now is the perfect time to think about summer camp!
This Friday, June 9th, 2017, Amazon Studios will debut An American Girl Story: Summer Camp, Friends for Life on Prime Video. This is the fourth American Girl special for Prime Video and focuses on the fun and friendships that make summer camp so memorable.
Inspired by American Girl Doll Z Yang, the story follows Suzy (“Z”) and her best friend Paz, an aspiring engineer as they experience S.T.E.A.M (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) camp for the summer. Excited about being immersed in all-things tech, the girls are stunned when their administrator restricts their electronic devices in favor of exploring the great outdoors. Believing their summer is doomed, the girls adventure takes on a twist when they meet a mysterious counselor named Jordan. Creative, engaging, and inspirational, Jordan takes them on an adventure that opens up a world of possibilities for the girls.
Much like the previous original specials, friendship is at the heart of An American Girl Story: Summer Camp, Friends for Life. Z and Paz. As they attempt to solve the mystery of counselor “Jordan,” the two girls befriend fellow camper Drew, who is smart and insightful. Together, the girls discover that not everything is as it first appears.
As a mother, I really appreciated the film’s celebration of girls who are excited about S.T.E.A.M. Z, Paz, and Drew are smart and resourceful and that intelligence is celebrated. I have raised my daughter with an understanding that she can do anything she sets her heart on, including exploring science and technology, and this film reinforces those themes with positive female role models.
An American Girl Story: Summer Camp, Friends for Life stars Zoe Manarel as “Z”, Alison Fernandez as Paz, Lauren Donzis as Drew, and Monique Green as Jordan. Prime members can stream An American Girl Story: Summer Camp, Friends for Life beginning June 9th, 2017 via the Amazon Prime Video app for TVs, connected devices such as Amazon Fire TV and mobile devices, or online at Amazon.com/Originals. To coincide with the debut of An American Girl Story: Summer Camp, Friends for Life, American Girl will bring “Z” to life in a beautiful 18-inch doll and accompanying accessories.
