Affordable Vision Care Services From Walmart

Posted by Caryn Bailey Leave a Comment

As an RN and a mom, I try to ensure that our family has received all of their annual check-ups. Physical exams, routine labs, dental cleanings and screenings…it can all become a bit overwhelming, particularly when you factor in two small children.  One of the things I’ve found, even in our own family, is that vision screenings always seem to be put off. Because I have been wearing contact lenses/glasses since I was a child, I have to go in every year to ensure my prescriptions have not changed. But for my husband and 2 children, who do not need corrective lenses, it is very easy to let a year (or more) go by without a visit to the eye doctor.

Walmart Vision Center

When we moved out of LA, I found the process of searching for new doctors to be overwhelming.  Fortunately, with some trusted recommendations, we found skilled, caring practitioners.  After receiving all of our screenings, we still needed to find a reputable vision center that could screen my husband and I.  Interestingly enough, I recently learned that Walmart has In-Store Vision Centers at locations across the country.  Since it was time for both of our annual exams, I scheduled appointments for my husband and I at our local store.

Walmart Vision Center

Located inside more than 2500 Walmart stores nationwide, Walmart Vision Centers offer professional eye exams performed by an optometrist and provide expert advice on selecting frames, lenses, contact lenses, and eye care essentials all at affordable prices.

Eye Exams

Eye exams are quite affordable and Walmart Vision Centers actually accept most insurances (you can visit the website for a list of providers).  Because I still had a month before my annual eye exam was due, I had to pay out of pocket, but the total cost for a vision exam with contact lens fitting was just $89 ($58 for the exam, $31 for the contact lens fitting) which is quite affordable.

Vision Testing

Once I filled out my paperwork and submitted my insurance information, the technician performed a series of pre-tests, most of which were machine based.  I was screened for glaucoma, color blindness, and more.  I was then examined by the provider who checked my vision, the health of my eyes, and determined my prescription.  The only thing I was not able to complete was the eye dilation because I was alone (that particular exam blurs vision for 4-6 hours making it impossible to drive).  Fortunately, the center allows patients to come back for that exam when it is convenient which is what I plan to do.

equate 1 day 90 pack contact lensesThe practitioner provided me with a set of contact lenses, a case, and a small bottle of solution which will last a month…just enough time for me to get my new box of lenses.  I would have opted for Walmart’s new Equate 1-Day Disposable Contact Lenses if I didn’t have an eye condition that prevents me from wearing dailies.  One box of 90 lenses is just $30 which is an amazing deal!  The benefits of wearing dailies include less debris build-up which promotes healthy eyes, a built-in UV blocking feature, the convenience of not having to keep lenses clean, and the comfort of wearing brand new lenses each day.  You can find out more information about these new Disposable Contact Lenses on Walmart’s website.

Transitions Lenses

I actually purchased Transitions Lenses last year and opted not to get new glasses since I really don’t wear them that often. However, I was happy to learn that our Vision Center offered them (they are amazing and offer excellent protection from the sun’s harmful rays).

Frames

Additionally, Walmart offers incredibly affordable frames, starting at just $8.

Walmart Value Center

You’ll find prescription glasses, reading glasses, sunglasses, and more at Walmart’s Vision Center.

Vision Center

Overall, our experience was positive.  Because the center is busier than I expected, I recommend making an appointment and allowing at least an hour for the exam and fittings, should you require glasses or contact lenses.
