Adam Rex’s Children’s Books Inspire DreamWorks’ Home *Giveaway*

For my kids, DreamWorks’ Home was an exciting intergalactic adventure that taught them about the importance of looking past appearances into a person’s soul.  They were inspired by Tip’s perseverance and the uniquely perfect and often comical friendship between her and Oh.  With a fondness for the characters and the story, you can imagine how excited my kids were to learn that Home was actually inspired by Adam Rex’s children’s book titled The True Meaning of Smekday.

The True Meaning of SmekDay

© Adam Rex

The True Meaning of Smekday details the story of 12-year-old Tip, who is assigned to write a 5-page essay on this important day for the National Time Capsule contest.  Unsure of where to begin, she begins dreaming up ideas, which include alien messages sent through the mole on the back of her mother’s neck, an alien abduction of humans (including her mother) on Christmas Eve, and the invasion of Earth by an alien race called the Boov. As the book progresses, we see the unlikely friendship between outcast alien J.Lo and Tip as they set out on a journey to find her mother at the Happy Mouse Kingdom by way of hovercar and aspire to thwart another alien invasion. If you’ve seen the film Home, you’ll notice the striking resemblance between the 2 stories. The book, which my son has decided to search for on his next visit to our library, is fully illustrated with photos, drawings, newspaper clippings and comic sequences for an engaging read.

Smek for President

Perfectly timed for the release of DreamWorks’ Home is the highly anticipated sequel titled Smek for President. The story finds Tip and J. Lo setting off for yet another adventure, this time with aspirations to make peace with the Boov. J. Lo has a bounty on his head for the interfering with the Boov’s colonization of planet Earth.  His belief is that if he just speaks with Captain Smek, all will be right. Unfortunately, J. Lo does not receive the warm welcome he anticipated and in the midst of the Boovs’ first-ever presidential election, he is captured. This incredible, out-of-this-world adventure finds Tip and J.Lo once again fighting to make things right and return home safely.

I don’t have a favorite part of the movie because I haven’t seen it yet.  I’d like to see it because I enjoy Jim Parsons.
