As the lights started to come up after watching Abominable, I found myself fervently searching for a tissue. The story completely took me by surprise, and the emotion I felt reminded me why storytelling is so crucial to a film’s success. We saw the film in 4DX, and the immersive format made it easy to lose ourselves in the beauty of the breathtaking Himalayas.

Abominable
Chloe Bennet voices Yi, a teenager living in Shanghai, who discovers a young Yeti on the roof of the apartment building she lives in with her mother and grandmother. Realizing just how far from home “Everest” is, Yi and her friends Jin and Pen, set out on an epic 2,009 mile adventure from Shanghai to the Himalayas to reunite him with his family. The trio will have to stay one step ahead of Burnish, a wealthy man intent on capturing the Yeti, and zoologist Dr. Zara, who’s interest in Everest is unscrupulous to get him home.
Yi is a touch older than my own kids, and yet after seeing the film, each of them related to her and her story in unique ways. I lost my father in my early adulthood, so I empathized with Yi’s attempts to cope with his loss by distancing herself from her friends and family. Smart, independent, and resourceful, Yi spends her free time working local jobs to save money for the trip around China that her and her father had dreamed about.
From the surface, the film might appear to be “another Yeti movie.” But Abominable shines with its poignant story infused with Chinese culture and complemented by stunning animation. The messages about respecting your older family members and appreciating your culture are ones not often portrayed in animated films.
Abominable in 4DX
We are huge fans of watching films in 4DX and my kids love the effects (particularly the motion and water effects). 4DX offers audiences a multi-sensory experience, immersing them within the film. The latest cinematic technology allows audiences to experience motion, vibration, water, wind, snow, lightning, scent, and more thanks to 4DX.
Abominable’s lush visuals are perfect for the 4DX format. This incredible journey through the streets of Shanghai and the snowy Himalayas are complemented through wind, rain water, motion, and scent.
