A Whole New Way To Clean

Posted by Caryn Bailey Leave a Comment

Spring is on the horizon and for many, this is the time to take inventory of your home to decide what needs to be addressed.  Whether it’s organizing important documents (raising my hand) or taking the time to do an in-depth cleaning, spring is the time to make a change.  And speaking of changes, how green is your clean?  If you’re interested in learning more about conventional cleaning products, the EPA offers information on the environmental and health concerns of these products.

We rid our home of conventional cleaning products almost 5 years ago and have never regretted that decision. There are a number of greener cleaning alternatives including traditional baking soda, vinegar, and lemon.  But sometimes, the grease on the stove or the soap residue in the shower is too difficult to remove and it is helpful to enlist the assistance of targeted, formulated cleaners.

Whole Foods recently introduced a new line of safe, eco-friendly cleaners free from phosphates, chlorine, and phthalates.  The line includes a variety of scented (derived from essential oils) and unscented cleaning products designed to clean your entire home.  The products are packaged in recyclable, biodegradable bottles to minimize the environmental impact.  Last week while I was at Whole Foods, I picked up their All Purpose Concentrated Cleaner, Citrus Liquid Dish Soap ($3.69), and Lavender Fabric Softener ($4.99).  I prefer cleaning products with a pleasant scent, however, the line includes several unscented products for those who are sensitive.  I also prefer one multi-purpose cleaner that can be used throughout the home to save on packaging, time, and money.

Their All Purpose Cleaner has a lovely pine scent and is concentrated so that you don’t need a lot to get the job done.  Use it for your refrigerator, your bathroom or your floors!  Whole Foods also sells an All Purpose Spray Cleaner if you’d rather not have to worry about diluting it.

The Liquid Dish Soap is available in Citrus, Mandarin Orange or Unscented varieties and is effective at removing food residue. I don’t typically use a lot of Dish Soap as we primarily strive to use our water and energy-saving dishwasher.  I did not opt to try out their Dishwasher Detergent because at present, it’s only available in powder form and we prefer a liquid.

We consider Fabric Softener a luxury and purchase it very infrequently.  The mild lavender scent of the softener is soothing and our clothes didn’t feel so stiff, which is often a result of line drying.  Whole Foods also offers Fabric Softener Sheets and Liquid or Powder Laundry Detergent.
