I honestly did not believe a person’s tongue could get frozen to a pole until I saw A Christmas Story. The iconic film is symbolic of the era I grew up in, but my kids have never seen it. So when we walked through MainPlace Mall to see Santa and I quoted “You’ll shoot your eye out,” I was met with blank stares from my kids. On my holiday to-do list: watch A Christmas Story with my kids. Whether you grew up in the ’80s watching the film, or you are looking for a Santa experience that is nostalgic and unconventional, visit MainPlace Mall’s A Christmas Story this holiday season.

A Christmas Story
A Christmas Story debuted in 1983 and was inspired by anecdotes in Jean Shepherd’s book, In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash and Wanda Hickey’s Night of Golden Memories and Other Disasters. Ranked as one of the best Christmas films, it was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress for being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.” The film tells the heartwarming narrative of Ralphie, a young boy in the 1940s who longs for a special Christmas present: a Red Ryder Carbine Action 200-shot Range Model air rifle. Hence the quote, “you’ll shoot your eye out,” a warning from those much older than him that a gun was not necessarily the most appropriate “toy” for a child.
A Christmas Story at MainPlace Mall
A Christmas Story is a brand new experience that will transport you back to Ralphie’s 1940’s era home. Working closely with Warner Bros., developer took key scenes from the film to create a multi-sensory experience designed to engage and entertain families as they wait to see Santa. Because the treasured film is so widely watched, the experience should appeal to children, teens, and even older folks like myself who grew up watching the film.
Begin the experience with a photo in front of Ralphie’s home. As you walk through the set, you’ll see replicas of period-specific food items, appliances, and furnishings as the sounds of an antique radio play in the background. Incorporating elements of the popular selfie museums with augmented reality, families can take photos inside the Parker family kitchen and next to the film’s iconic leg lamp (for an additional feel).
Use the free augmented reality app to don a pink bunny suit (do you remember the pink bunny pjs Ralphie received from his Aunt Clara?) and watch the neighbor’s bloodhounds knock over the table and steal the Christmas turkey.
The experience culminates in a visit with Santa and a slide down the movie’s famous slide to exit (just like Ralphie did when Santa gave him the boot).
Visit With Santa Claus
Through December 24th, 2019, kids can drop off their letters to Santa, share their wish lists and take a professional photo with Santa at MainPlace Mall’s A Christmas Story. The experience is located on Level 1 in the Macy’s Court. A walk through the set is free, but if you would like to make a Santa Fast Pass reservation (highly recommended as we enter the busy holiday season), you will need to purchase a photo package.
