Growing up in Southern California meant that our field trips sometimes included learning about California’s history at Knott’s Berry Farm. Suffice it to say, I grew up at the park, and some of my favorite memories were shared with my father, who loved the thrill of roller coasters. The park has undergone much in the way of innovation, particularly when it comes to the thrill and speed of its coasters. But what I love is the familiarity and Knott’s history that permeates throughout the park. Knott’s Berry Farm celebrates 100 years in 2020, and I want your family to be part of this incredible celebration. Be sure to scroll down to enter the Ultimate Knott’s Berry Farm Giveaway.

A Knott’s Family Reunion
Knott’s offers a variety of seasons of fun throughout the year, including Knott’s Peanuts Celebration, Knott’s Boysenberry Festival, Knott’s Spooky Farm, Knott’s Scary Farm, and Knott’s Merry Farm. I want you to enjoy them all, including their special Knott’s Family Reunion, a summertime event that will celebrate 100 years of memory-making at the park.
During this once-in-a-lifetime celebration, the park will be transformed with new themed food items, unique entertainment, exclusive merchandise, and surprises, all designed to celebrate this historic year.
Knott’s Berry Farm and the Boysenberry
…It was all started by a berry. Almost 100 years ago, the Knott family decided to make Buena Park their home. I often try to picture what the city looked like in 1930. The family began farming on 20 acres of land on Highway 39 (which is more known in the community as Beach Blvd.). Walter and Cordelia Knott happened upon the boysenberry, a cross between a loganberry, a red raspberry, and a blackberry. This hybrid berry was originated by Rudolph Boysen, hence the name. Walter Knott acquired the Boysenberry from Boysen…and the rest is history! Interestingly enough, every single boysenberry can be traced back to Knott’s Berry Farm!
Mrs. Knott’s Chicken Dinner
It would be impossible to tell Knott’s Berry Farm’s complete story without mentioning Mrs. Knott’s Chicken Dinner. During the Great Depression, the Knotts struggled, so Cordelia began selling jams and jellies made from Walter’s boysenberries. In 1934, the very first chicken dinner was served on their wedding china. The cost? Just 65 cents.
Word spread quickly, and soon, locals and visitors began to stop in for Mrs. Knott’s famous fried chicken dinner meals. Hundreds of guests would line up for her meals, so Walter built a working Ghost Town to entertain the waiting guests and as a homage to the pioneering spirit of his grandparents. Another interesting fact is that Ghost Town eventually became one of Knott’s Berry Farm’s original themed areas. Ghost Town, which still stands today, features relics from other deserted ghost towns and truly is the soul of the park.
