I was a teenager when Disney’s The Lion King was released in theaters. The story about a young lion who is forced to flee into exile after being tricked into assuming culpability for his father’s death is the second highest grossing film of all time, and rightly so. The film is poignant and funny, with deeply moving messages of family, love, and sacrifice. Sixteen years after the release of the film, Disney released its third live action remake this year.

The Lion King

Directed by Jon Favreau, The Lion King takes audiences to the African savanna just after the birth of the future king. Simba longs to be like his father King Mufasa, aspiring to assume the royal thrown in due time. But not everyone in the kingdom supports the new cub’s arrival. Mufasa’s brother Scar, the formal heir to the throne, has plans to assume his presumed rightful place as king. The battle for Pride Rock is wrought with betrayal, tragedy, and death, and Simba retreats into exile.

Now on his own in the desert, Simba must grow up on his own, and aspire to take back his rightful thrown. Rescued by new friends Timon and Pumbaa, Simba and his childhood friend Nala venture to save the Pride Lands.

The story, influenced by the lives of Joseph, Moses, and Shakespeare’s Hamlet, remains true to the original. The live-action remake retains the heart and emotion of Disney’s animated film, while the photorealistic computer-generated remake creates a more dramatic, and somewhat darker tone to the film. The cinematography is stunning, and there were moments throughout the film where I had to pause and remind myself that the images on screen were in fact computer-generated because the realism is impressive. While many of the songs have been updated and modernized, they served to advance the plot and heighten emotion in Disney’s unique, magical way.

The Lion King in 4DX

Of all the films I’ve seen in 4DX, The Lion King was the most impressive. 4DX transforms the moviegoing experience into one where you as the audience are part of the film. With 21 different kinds of effects, you will experience the emotion of the film with precise synchrony.

One of our favorite 4DX effects was roaming the African Savanna with the wildlife. We moved with the animals as they explored the vast terrain. Even their subtle movements were felt in real life, drawing us into the story and their world.

Here are the effects you don’t want to miss when you see The Lion King in 4DX:

The wildebeest stampede scene features fog, wind, motion & vibration, and air shots, all of which capture the suspense as the chairs follow the thunderous movements.
The mighty roar of Mufasa is experienced through vibration and motion.
When you see The Lion King in 4DX, you’ll experience the scents of the safari plains, the ominous elephant graveyard, the umami of the bugs in the logs, and the iconic waterfall from the famous Hakuna Matata scene.
Experience the thrill of the hunt through wind, motion and vibration, scent as experience the speed and agility of the lions.
During the iconic “Hakuna Matata” scene, the chairs dance along to the song through heave, pitch, and vibration. When the crew crosses the waterfall, water and scent accompany the movements and motion.
During “The Lions Sleeps Tonight,” the chairs vibration and motion gently rocks along to the beat of ‘Wimoweh’.
4DX captures the little details of the animals of the kingdom including the vibrations of a rhino snort and the galloping motion of antelopes running.
