Last week, my son came home with his latest literary find. “Have you ever read James and the Giant Peach mom?” I smiled knowingly, just as I imagine my own mother did with a familiarity that comes from being a bibliophile. Roald Dahl is a legend in the children’s lit space, and anyone who loves to read is certain to have been immersed in classics like The BFG and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Dahl’s writings are colorful and imaginative, easily transferred from the page to the screen and the stage. The Segerstrom Center for the Arts will debut Charlie and the Chocolate Factory for a limited Spring run May 28th through June 9th, 2019.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory tells the story of Willy Wonka, a world famous inventor of the Everlasting Gobstopper. Wonka will open his marvelous and mysterious factory gates to a lucky few who find a gold ticket hidden within select chocolate bars. Charlie Bucket is among the lucky guests, whose life is in need of sweetening. Him and four other golden ticket winners will embark on a dazzling, life-changing journey through Wonka’s world of pure imagination. As in the book, audiences can expect OompaLoompas, incredible inventions, the great glass elevator, and more.
With a story based on the 1964 children’s novel, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory will also feature a brand new score from the songwriters of Hairspray, and familiar songs from the film including “Pure Imagination,” “The Candy Man,” and “I’ve Got a Golden Ticket.”
Kids Night on Broadway
On Tuesday May 28th, 2019, the Segerstrom Center for the Arts will host a special Kids Night on Broadway during opening night of the musical.
