I was first introduced to Cirque du Soleil years ago by a friend who’s family made it a point to see every show. A modern shift on the tradition of circus arts, Cirque du Soleil has been performing across the globe for over 35 years. This Spring, Corteo and Amaluna will perform in Southern California for a limited run.
Cirque du Soleil
Cirque du Soleil has its roots in Montreal, where 20 street performers sought to reinvent the art of the circus. Each unique show has a central theme and storyline and fuses circus styles from around the world. Unlike the traditional circus, Cirque du Soleil feels more like a theatrical production under the big top, featuring live music and jaw-dropping acrobatics. The absence of performing animals is also noteworthy.
Corteo
Corteo is Cirque du Soleil’s latest and most enchanting arena production. Corteo means cortege in Italian and is a joyous procession; a festive parade imagined by a clown. The show brings together the passion of the actor with the grace and power of the acrobat to immerse the audience in a theatrical world of fun, comedy, and spontaneity in that mysterious space between heaven and earth. The clown pictures his own funeral taking place in a carnival atmosphere, watched over by quietly caring angels. Juxtaposing the large with the small, the ridiculous with the tragic, and the magic of perfection with the charm of imperfection, Corteo highlights the strength and fragility of the clown, along with his wisdom and kindness, to illustrate the portion of humanity that is within each of us. The music turns lyrical and playful, carrying Corteo through a timeless celebration in which illusion teases reality.
The set curtains, inspired by the Eiffel Tower, and the central curtains, which were hand-painted, give a grandiose feel to the stage. The concept and disposition of the stage bring the audience into a theatrical atmosphere like never seen before in a Cirque du Soleil arena show. Corteo will perform at The Forum March 27 through March 31, 2019.
Amaluna
Amaluna is a fusion of the words ama, which refers to “mother” in many languages, and luna, which means “moon”; a symbol of femininity that evokes both the mother-daughter relationship and the idea of goddess and protector of the planet. Amaluna is also the name of the mysterious island, governed by Goddesses and guided by the cycles of the moon, where this magical story unfolds. Their queen, Prospera, directs her daughter’s coming-of-age ceremony in a rite that honors femininity, renewal, rebirth, and balance and marks the passing of these insights and values from one generation to the next. In the wake of a storm caused by Prospera, a group of young men land on the island, triggering an epic, emotional story of love between Prospera’s daughter and a brave young suitor. But theirs is a love that will be put to the test. The couple must face numerous demanding trials and overcome daunting setbacks before they can achieve mutual trust, faith, and harmony. The show draws from a series of classical influences including tales from Greek and Norse mythology, Mozart’s The Magic Flute, and Shakespeare’s The Tempest.
Unique to the show, Amaluna features, for the first time in Cirque du Soleil history, a cast comprised mostly of women and a 100% female band. Amaluna will perform under the Big Top at the LA Waterfront April 25t through May 26, 2019.
