I saw The King and I for the first time in London at the Palladium and was convinced it was the most beautiful show ever produced. Not only does the show feature music and lyrics from the legendary Rodgers & Hammerstein (who also composed The Sound of Music), it is the ultimate story of unrequited love. The King and I will continue its national tour at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts February 27th through March 11, 2018.
The King and I
The King and I is based on Anna and the King of Siam, a novel published in the 1940s by author Margaret Landon. Of interest is the fact that the novel itself was derived from the memoirs of governess Anna Leonowens, who cared for the children of King Mongkut of Siam in the 1860s. Set in Bangkok during this time, The King and I tells the story of Anna, a British schoolteacher hired to help modernize the country by teaching the King’s wives and children. What ensues is an unconventional, often tempestuous relationship between the King and Anna. While often marked by conflict, their love between them is strong, though neither of them can admit it.
The King and I first premiered on Broadway in 1951 and is now the fourth longest-running Broadway musical of all time. During this year’s national tour, Laura Michelle Kelly stars as Anna and Jose Llana stars as the King of Siam. As truly one of the greatest musicals of all time, The King and I has won a number of awards including Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Actress, and Best Featured Actor. The score features timeless classics like “Getting to Know You,” “Shall We Dance,” “I Have Dreamed, and “Something Wonderful.”
