One of the many reasons I love to travel is to escape the day-to-day routine. Something as simple as sleeping in and enjoying breakfast in bed is incredibly restorative. So when I think about setting the mood in my home to host friends or family, I strive to replicate experiences that might be available in a nice hotel.
5 Tips for Preparing Your Home for Guests
The new year is often a time of reflection, and one of the things I want to do more of is welcome people into my home. Along with ensuring that my home is tidy and organized, here are my best tips for preparing the home for guests.
- Wash linens: Earlier this week, I went through my inventory of bed linens and realized I am in need of a few extra pillows. Prior to guests arrival, ensure that they will be comfortable with freshly laundered sheets, blankets, pillowcases, and towels.
- Consider a one-time deep clean: While you could easily spend half a day scrubbing bathroom and floors, I recommend hiring someone on a one-time (or as needed) basis to save a bit of time and energy as you prepare for guests.
- Prepare a welcome basket: One of my favorite ways to prepare for house guests is to prepare a basket with essentials. It is not uncommon for those traveling to forget items like toothpaste, lip balm, and shampoo. Pick up travel-sized bottles of essentials and arrange in a small basket that you can then leave on the bed or nightstand.
- Ensure your home smells nice: One easy way to freshen up a home prior to hosting guests is to use a Fragrance Mist! I stumbled upon the Glade® Atmosphere Collection™ Fine Fragrance Mist at my local Walmart recently. The four scents available in the collection are infused with essential oils and contain masterfully crafted fragrances. The scents include No. 1 Enraptured™, No. 2 Bright™, No. 3 Free™, and No. 4 Tempted™. These sprays are lovely and comparable to room sprays you might find in a luxury store at a price you can afford. Because I wanted to liven up my home, I picked up the Glade® Atmosphere Collection™ Fine Fragrance Mist No.2 Bright™ which is reflective of the style and mood in my home. This particular fragrance mist features a touch of ripe raspberries and orchard fruit notes with jasmine, rose, and sweet pea. It also includes powder musk, sweet tonka bean, and sheer blonde woods scents. Simply spray up, then sweep side to side to set the mood in any room.
- Give guests a luxurious experience: Along with infusing my home with luxury scents, I like to include a few touches that mimic what guests might experience in a hotel. Ideas include an in-room coffee station and breakfast in bed.
Breakfast in Bed Ideas
- Serve their favorite dish: If possible, serve a dish they love and add a gourmet twist. For example, if your guest enjoys waffles, elevate the recipe with fresh fruit and whipped cream.
- Find a sturdy tray: Breakfast trays vary widely in style and price. I recommend finding a simple wood tray that looks beautiful and sturdy enough to hold the essentials. I picked up my breakfast tray for under $20 at Walmart.
- Pick up fresh flowers: Flowers are a lovely, inexpensive touch that makes guests feel special.
- Don’t forget the condiments: If you plan to serve coffee, make sure to have creamer and sugar available for guests enjoying breakfast in bed. Additional essentials include salt and pepper for savory dishes, ketchup, and syrup for pancakes and waffles.
- Consider including sparkling cider or champagne: You can elevate your guest’s breakfast in bed experience with sparkling cider or champagne.
