My dad was a die-hard football fan, and every year around this time, our Sunday afternoons consisted of watching his favorite teams on TV. My acceptance into UCLA strengthened his ties to the team, and we would often celebrate with friends and family over our passion for the sport. College football bowl season begins December 16th and runs through early January. While wearing team apparel and tailgating are popular ways to celebrate the football season, food is what often brings people together. Whether you plan to host a party for the big game or you prefer an intimate gathering with family/friends, there are numerous opportunities to Feed Your Fandom with Foster Farms.
This is part of a sponsored campaign with Foster Farms.
Foster Farms Bowl
The Foster Farms Bowl is an NCAA-certified college football bowl game played each year. On December 27th, 2017, the Arizona Wildcats will face the Purdue Boilmakers at the Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California. You can also watch the game on Fox Sports. The bowl was initially launched as a hunger relief program.
Foster Farms
One of my father’s signature game-time recipes was a simply, hearty chili. It was so popular among family and friends, that it became part of our game-time spread each season. As a family, we have always been health-conscious, so his chili was surprisingly made with ground turkey versus ground beef. His experimentation with recipes and passion for home-cooked dishes largely inspired my own journey with food.
We recently discovered Foster Farms’ Ground Turkey and used it in a recipe for BBQ Meatballs. Because their turkey is 100% natural and free from added hormones or steroids, it makes for a healthy alternative in tacos, chili, burgers, and more.
If you prefer chicken, Foster Farms offers a variety of options including their Simply Raised line, which is American Humane Certified, fed a 100% vegetarian diet, and grown without added hormones, steroids, or antibiotics. Available as breasts and legs, you can marinate and grill Foster Farms chicken in your favorite sauce. Or grill, then slice the chicken for flatbreads, sliders, salads, and more.
Feed Your Fandom

Also included on these specially-marked packages are game day recipes such as Foster Farms’ Buffalo Blue Cheese Roll-Up Sandwiches, Easy Chicken Party Poppers, and Chicken White Bean Chili. Slow Cooker Coca Cola BBQ Meatballs
Game time recipes should be relatively simple and flavorful. I prefer appetizers and foods that I can pick up and eat while I’m socializing or immersed in the game. My kids love meatballs, so I decided to make Slow Cooker Coca Cola BBQ Meatballs. Rather than make the sauce myself, I purchased a bottle of BBQ sauce, mixed it with 1/2 a bottle of Coca Cola, and placed my meatballs into the slow cooker with the sauce. In just a few hours, the dish is ready. I like to use the slow cooker so that the meatballs retain their moisture and don’t dry out. It also allows sufficient time for them to absorb the Coca Cola BBQ sauce.
- 1 pound Foster Farms Ground Turkey
- 1 tbsp water
- 1/2 onion chopped finely
- 1/2 green bell pepper chopped finely
- 2 cloves of garlic chopped finely
- 1/2 cup Panko bread crumbs
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1/2 bottle BBQ sauce
- 1/2 bottle Coca Cola
-
In a large bowl, combine ground turkey, egg, water, onion, bell pepper, garlic, bread crumbs, salt, and pepper.
-
Form mixture into medium-sized meatballs and place in one layer at the bottom of a slow cooker
-
Combine BBQ Sauce and Coca Cola and pour over meatballs
-
Cook on high for 3 hours or until meatballs are cooked (you may use a meat thermometer to ensure the meatballs are done)
The prep time for these meatballs is minimal, but be sure to plan ahead since the dish takes about 3 full hours to cook. You could easily start the dish in the morning so that it is ready by noon for game time.
My kids devoured these meatballs almost as soon as they were ready. I had thought about serving them with veggies and macaroni and cheese, but they were gone before I could even begin to think about additional dishes.
The second appetizer I prepared was an easy BBQ Chicken Flatbread. I started by seasoning Foster Farms Thin-Sliced Chicken Breasts with salt, pepper, and garlic powder and baked in the oven at 400ºF for 10 minutes. I then sliced the chicken into small pieces to top my flatbreads.
You can use any thin-sliced flatbread or use a thin pizza crust. I used Lavash and spread a thin layer of BBQ sauce over it. I then sprinkled a mixture of jack and cheddar cheeses, sliced red onion, and chicken pieces. You can finish the BBQ Chicken Flatbread with fresh, chopped cilantro, if desired. Bake the flatbread at 400ºF for 10-12 minutes, or until the cheese has melted. Do not over bake. Serve immediately.
