BC (before children!) I spent a ton of money on cosmetics. We didn’t own a home and our expenses were so minimal that I thought nothing of spending $100+ on a bottle of shampoo and conditioner (shocking I know!). These days we’ve obviously had to cut our expenses, and to be honest I don’t have a lot of time for primping. I need products that are going to work quickly and effectively without consuming a lot of my time.
Thanks to Mom Central and Suave, I was able to try products from their Professionals line of hair care products. You should know that I have naturally curly hair that tends to frizz without the application of a product. Most days I wear my hair curly but occasionally I like to use a flat iron to straighten it for special occasions. I also highlight my hair, albeit not as often now that we have a little boy. The amount of chemical and physical stress my hair undergoes, combined with it’s tendency to get dry requires products that preserve the color, retain it’s moisture, and enhance it’s shine.
I started by trying the Color Care Shampoo and Conditioner. Suave maintains that the Color Care line gently cleanses and protects color-treated hair from environmental elements by locking in color and preventing fading. The first thing I noticed was the pleasant smell (my shampoo and conditioner have to smell good!). Beyond that I found that both products made my hair feel clean without weighing it down. I am in definite need of some touch-up on my roots so it’s hard to gauge the effect on my hair color. At the very least I found that there was no additional fading.
The Sleek line is my favorite of the three. My hair can really get out of control if I let it…and when you add humidity to the mix it makes for a challenging styling situation. I definitely noticed less frizz and more manageability after using the shampoo and conditioner. Suave maintains that the Sleek Line smoothes and moisturizes dry or frizzy hair.
Have you ever heard that you should switch of hair care products you use because your hair “gets used to them?” My stylist told me that a. It’s true and b. It’s the result of build-up. Suave’s Vibrant Shine line restores shine and moisture to hair. The line is formulated with silk amino acids to cleanse and remove build-up. I actually like this as a go-between when my hair is getting used to a particular type of shampoo/conditioner.
One of the things I like about Suave’s Professionals is that they compare each of the products to a more expensive, well-known professional brand. Many of us cannot afford salon products and it’s nice to have an inexpensive, effective alternative.
In addition to the above mentioned products, I received Suave’s Professionals Extra Hold Styling Foam and Extra Hold Styling & Finishing Spray. Since my husband and I don’t use hairspray, I gave this to my father who is very easy to please. As long as it keeps his hair in place he’s content. He said that it didn’t leave his hair sticky or hard. My husband and I both tried the styling foam and really found it to be effective. We both have curly hair so we liked that it maintained our styling without leaving our hair sticky or hard.
Summer sun and the salt from the ocean or chlorine from pools can wreak havoc on your hair. Check out these Summer Hair Care Tips from Suave:
Shine Through Summer
· Chlorine from the pool can quickly turn hair dry and dull. Look for hair products specially-designed to infuse shine. Also, blow dry hair from roots to ends, making sure you do not ruffle your hair. By doing this, you’ll keep the cuticle of your hair lying flat, thus reflect more light and producing more shine.
Don’t Let Your Hair Fall when Temps Rise
· Hot summer weather and humidity can cause your hair to lose its shape. Apply a little mousse to damp hair to add body and help control your style. For added fullness, flip your head over and blow dry the roots. When you flip your head upright, your hair will be at maximum volume.
Hold That Look
· Heat and humidity can be tough to battle, and here’s where the right hairspray comes to the rescue. To keep a soft, full, long lasting look, use an extra hold hairspray and keep the can 8-10 inches away from your head while spraying all over. This allows the fine mist of spray to penetrate the roots and hold the hair in place.
Make Summer Styling Smooth Sailing
· Frizzies and fly-aways suddenly appear during the summer months with humidity at an all-time high. Achieving frizz-free hair starts in the shower with a shampoo and conditioner specially formulated to fight frizz. When blow drying hair, again be sure to blow dry from roots to ends to smooth the cuticle.
Fight the Fade
· Have color-treated hair? Lock in your color and keep hair healthy during the summer by protecting your hair with products designed to fight the elements, such as color-protecting shampoos, waterproof gels, and UV protectors.

Wow! $100? I didn’t realize hair products could cost that much. I thought $15 was expensive. I obviously don’t get around.
