Surviving the teen years is like a rite of passage. The exciting “firsts” and opportunities to exert independence are juxtaposed against the mood swings, angst, and acne. Admittedly, I would never choose to go back to that time in my life, despite the fact that I managed to escape relatively unscathed. The only reminder I have of those whirlwind years is the occasional breakout that wreaks havoc on my complexion.
What is acne?
Each year, nearly 50 million Americans suffer from acne. This inflammatory skin condition is most common in teens, however, acne can occur at any stage of life. Uncomfortable and aggravating, chronic acne can cause permanent scarring, poor self image, depression, and anxiety (American Academy of Dermatology). And while hormones are often to blame for this annoying skin condition, stress, medications, diet, and genetics all play a role in the onset and severity of acne.
Do I really need to see a Dermatologist to treat acne?
For the past few weeks, I have been using a personalized prescription formula from Curology. At nearly 40, I still suffer with the occasional breakout, although my initial interest in the platform was to consult with their healthcare providers about acne scarring. I find it fascinating that I can receive a personalized acne medication from a licensed healthcare provider without ever stepping foot into a dermatologist’s office. As a busy, working mom, this not only helps to save me time, this makes it feasible for me to take care of ME.
With the sheer number of people experiencing acne in the US, access is understandably a barrier. Many patients do not seek out treatment from a dermatologist because they are unwilling or unable to get an appointment. Curology seeks to bridge the gap between access and treatment by providing those who suffer with acne, a professional online solution. Anyone can sign up for an account and begin the evaluation process, which includes answering a series of questions about medical history, skincare regimen, and current skin condition/symptoms. Once you have uploaded some photos, a licensed healthcare provider will take time to assess and then prescribe a personalized treatment regimen.
A Holistic approach to the treatment of acne
Acne can be precipitated by a number of factors, which makes a holistic approach optimal. My healthcare provider prescribed a formula that includes a combination of Tretinoin, Vitamin C, and Niacinamide, but my plan includes more than just a nightly application of a prescription cream. Sun protection, a nightly skincare regimen (including cleansing and moisturizing), and diet are all changes I have made while using my prescribed formula from Curology. This holistic approach has helped ensure that I do everything I can to prevent further breakouts and subsequent scarring. When you begin your treatment for acne with Curology, be sure to look at your entire plan which provides helpful information and guides regarding makeup, sunscreen, diet, and more.
While topical formulas are Curology’s mainstay treatment, in some instances, a provider may prescribe an oral medication such as an antibiotic in combination with a topical formula. What I appreciate most about Curology is that your provider develops a personalized plan that takes into consideration your medical history, symptoms and regiment to find a solution that works.
Do not suffer alone
Chronic acne can take a mental toll, resulting in low self-esteem and feelings of depression. I personally love the community aspect of Curology, which allows members the option of sharing photos of their progress and any feelings of frustration. If at any time while you are undergoing treatment with Curology you feel like your prescription isn’t working for you, do not hesitate to reach out to your provider, who will respond within 48 hours.

For the last year I have been struggling with acne, at age 49!! My skin has gotten incredibly oily due to hormonal changes. I have made an appoints with a dermatologist but Cureology would be so convenient and it looks like it is effective. And I believe the cost is very reasonable. I would love to win this.
