We’ve just spent the past week hiking and soaking in all the beauty of Utah’s incredible National Parks, a wonderful reprieve from the day-to-day grind of homework and deadlines. While our vacation was largely spent “seeing and doing,” it felt good to get out and get active in some of the most beautiful places on Earth. And while my legs feel happily tired from the intense workout they received, my skin feels noticeably dry. Because we were hiking, my skin was exposed to the sun’s harsh rays, the dry desert air, and dirt from the trails. I’ve noticed that my occasional skin dryness has become more noticeable as I age, and throughout the year, particularly during the winter and summer months, I have to be very diligent about moisturizing and protecting my skin.
During the summer, our skin is exposed to a variety of elements including wind, sun, sand, salt water, chlorine and more. And while the basic components of a skin care regime remain the same, there are some things you can do to ensure your skin is vibrant and hydrated, even at the beach.
- Wear sunscreen every single day. The sun’s rays are the harshest mid-day, so avoid direct exposure when possible. Apply sunscreen to your face and body prior to sun exposure and every 2 hours, to ensure maximum protection from the sun’s harmful rays.
- Keep yourself (and your skin) hydrated. Invest in a good moisturizer and apply it twice daily. You might also consider using a hydrating mask once a week. Be sure to drink 8 eight-ounce glasses of water every day to ensure that your body and your skin remain hydrated.
- Don’t forget to protect your lips. Use a lip balm with an SPF of 15 or higher to protect the lips’ delicate skin.
- Exfoliate regularly. Removing the dead skin cells that lie on the surface of the skin can help improve the overall look and feel of your skin.
- Use professional skin care products. With a seemingly endless array of skin care products available, it is difficult to select those that are effective. Burke Williams offers an exclusive skin care line called H2V, which combines botanical and herbal ingredients with tested, scientifically-proved ingredients. The products were designed to repair and enhance skin. One of the most popular products in the line is Triple C. Not only does it contain 3 forms of Vitamin C to stimulate collagen, firm skin and lighten dark spots, it helps with healing, hydration and tightening of the skin.
In addition to the above skin care tips, I also recommend getting regular facials, if possible. Burke Williams has a team of estheticians who will provide a customized facial. If you schedule facials regularly, you’ll find that over time your skin will look and feel noticeably different. Through July 31st, 2017, if you book a Nourishing Facial at Burke Williams, you will receive a complimentary peel.
