Matilda the Musical at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts

Matilda the Musical is here, and it captures all the magic of Roald Dahl’s work. As a child, I found myself fascinated by the works of Roald Dahl. His stories were whimsical and fantastical, filled with unpredictable endings and surprises at every turn. I remember watching Charlie and the Chocolate Factory over and over with my father and getting lost in a giant magical peach.

Among Dahl’s most popular works is Matilda, which tells the story of a a six year old girl who is exceptionally intelligent, but often mistreated and neglected by her parents. Her recourse is to pull pranks in order to get their attention. The book, which was listed among the top 30 children’s novels of all time, was adapted for the stage in 2010 by British playwright Dennis Kelly and Australian writer/musician Tim Minchin.

Matilda the Musical – Bringing Roald Dahl’s Magic to the Stage

Matilda the Musical was staged by the Royal Shakespeare Company at Straford-upon-Avon for 12 weeks before moving to the West End for it’s premiere at the Cambridge Theatre in London. The musical’s popularity among fans propelled it to Broadway where it debuted at the Shubert Theatre. With seven Olivier Awards and five Tony Awards, the musical continues to delight audiences across the globe.

This extraordinary story of a little girl who’s imaginative and extremely intelligent, inspires audiences to take a stand and change their destiny, just like Matilda. When Miss Honey, Matilda’s teacher, recognizes her incredible knowledge of math and literature, she is both impressed and concerned that Matilda doesn’t understand the extent of her abilities. Miss Honey, although hesitant to approach the Headmistress, musters up the courage to recommend that Matilda be placed with more mature students. The musical proceeds to follow Matilda’s resolve to over come the obstacles in her life to better her situation.

Matilda the Musical will debut at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts on January 17th, 2017 and run through January 29th, 2017. Pre-Show Activities for Matilda the Musical include a book-themed photo op, crafts, and the opportunity to write in your future dreams at the interactive “When I grow up…” book shelf art display. Tickets start at just $29 and can be purchased online at SCFTA.org, via phone (714.556.2787), or at the Box Office (600 Town Center Drive, Costa Mesa, CA 92626). Showtimes are as follows: Tuesday – Friday at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Sunday at 1 and 6:30 p.m.
