All the cool cats were out this week for EuropaCorp’s blue red carpet premiere of Nine Lives. And by cats I mean some of the world’s most famous including Nala, Waffles, Pudge and Lil Bub. Guests in attendance also had an opportunity to meet some of the cats currently available for adoption thanks to the Best Friends Animal Society. If you’re looking for a family pet, the Los Angeles division is offering $10 pet adoptions through August 10th!
Nine Lives – Fuzzy, Family-Friendly Fun
Nine Lives, which stars Kevin Spacey and Jennifer Garner, follows the story of Tom Brand (Spacey), a career-driven businessman at the height of his career. His success comes at a price…he’s disconnected from his wife Lara (Garner) and his daughter Rebecca (Malina Weissman), and the strain is tearing their family apart.
On the day of his daughter’s 11th birthday, he learns that Rebecca’s dream gift is a cat. Ironically, Tom despises cats, but in an effort to appease her, he frequents the mystical Purrkins Pet Shop, owned by Felix Perkins (Christopher Walken). Beyond his uncanny relationship with cats and his superhuman ability to communicate with them, we quickly learn that there is something mysterious about Perkins and his Pet Shop. The cat whisperer definitively presents Tom with tomcat Mr. Fuzzypants and he leaves in an effort to make his daughter’s birthday celebration. On the way to the party, Tom is involved in a serious accident, and while lying in a hospital bed he learns that he is now trapped inside Mr. Fuzzypants body.
Now at home with the Brands, Tom must experience life through a new perspective as the family pet. And if he wants to regain his status as husband and father, he’ll have to learn why he was placed in this situation and what he must do to earn back his human existence or be stuck as a cat forever.
The film’s central appeal is in its humor and kids will likely want to see it for the talking cats, many of which have gained notoriety through social media. In an age where families are constantly struggling to connect in the midst of busy schedules and pervasive technology comes a story that is not unfamiliar, but still relevant. While never overly imposing, the message of work-life balance the importance of people over things is weaved in through the film’s slapstick cat humor.
Cheryl Hines, Jennifer Garner, Malina Weissman and Robbie Arnell graced the carpet for the premiere, many showing their support for pet adoption. In addition to the mobile pet adoption clinic set-up for the premiere, guests enjoyed activities, sweets and treats from the Nine Lives-inspired Purrkins Shop.
The premiere of Nine Lives debuted at the beautiful TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles. The spacious auditorium seats nearly 1000 and features a VIP Suite and a private viewing box. The theatre is owned by TV manufacturer TCL, which makes quality TVs including their new 4K Smart TVs. During the premiere, I previewed several of their new TVs including their Roku TV, which was deemed “the first Smart TV worth using” by WIRED and named Best TV of 2014 by PC Mag. What’s equally impressive about TCL TVs is that they are consistently priced below competitors. TCL makes every part of the TV you see in-stores and is able to transfer that cost savings to its customers. Additionally, their control over the entire production process results in a consistent, high quality user experience. For more information about TCL, visit their website.
