My kids are quite the seasoned travelers, having each taken their first cross-country trip before their first steps. Because my desire for adventure trumps all of the planning and preparation that goes into traveling with kids, you’ll often find us jet-setting or road-tripping. Each comes with their own unique challenges and advantages. Road trips are ideal with kids since there is flexibility, specifically when it comes to how much you can pack and how often you can stop for a break. The trade-off is that very often, the journey is lengthier.
If you’re planning to travel with kids this summer, I’ve got 5 road trip essentials that will make your next vacation manageable and enjoyable.
- Keep them comfortable. Sitting in a car for more than an hour or two can become physically uncomfortable. I like to bring pillows and blankets (inevitably someone says they are cold) to ensure my kids can rest/sleep comfortably during the trip.
- Keep them safe. With any lengthy trip, you should expect the unexpected. Along with bringing an emergency kit with supplies for minor injuries and illnesses, you’ll want to pack a flashlight, water, food and back-up batteries in the event that your journey takes longer than expected.
- Keep them hydrated. Along with packing a sufficient supply of water, I like to bring single-serve juice boxes/pouches to help keep my kids hydrated. Juicy Juice is a favorite of ours since it contains 100% juice without added sugar. Each serving is the equivalent of one cup of fruit and packs in 120% daily recommend value of Vitamin C. With 16 flavors, you’re certain to find a variety your kids will love.
- Keep them well-fed. It never fails that the middle of the desert is where my kids decide that their hunger is insatiable. I tend to bring more snacks than I think we’ll eat to give my kids some choices during our road trips. A selection of healthy and slightly indulgent treats makes the trip that much more exciting (and manageable).
- Keep them entertained. If I had 8 hours in a car, I’d likely spend a good chunk of that time sleeping. Not so with small kids. Their need to move and do and be isn’t conducive to 8-hour road trips. A selection of books, coloring supplies, crafts, games, and technology help stave off boredom.
Our latest adventure took us to LEGOLAND California Resort for a day of bricktastic fun-in-the-sun. While the travel time is just under an hour, the wind can shift (also known as morning and evening rush hour) and suddenly, we’re in the car for 2. A little preparation and a few road trip essentials can help make the journey that much more enjoyable for the entire family.
