Summer is sleeping through the 6 am alarm clock that I forgot to disable, eating ice cream before dinner, and night swimming past my kids’ bedtime. Those all-too-short 2 1/2 months of summer break are always spent exploring, creating memories together and enjoying some much-needed downtime in anticipation of the coming school year.
Living in Southern California means we are often close enough to see the ocean. Sometimes, the marine layer is such that I can feel the salty breeze on my face as I walk out of our house in the mornings. We admittedly never spend enough time there, but several times throughout the summer, we’ll pack up a bag and spend an afternoon building sandcastles and chasing waves.
Despite the fact that my kids are old enough not to require what often amounted to a small section of my house when we ventured to the outside world, I still find that a few essential make even day trips manageable. In partnership with Dove, here are my favorite Beach Bag Essentials, perfect for a day lounging around with friends or perusing the shoreline for seashells.
- A roomy, stylish beach tote: This particular tote is from Jeanne Beatrice and is spacious enough to hold all of my beach essentials.
- A large beach blanket and/or beach towels: Ideally, I like to pack both a beach blanket and towels so that we can dry off and not worry about disturbing our resting spot.
- UV-blocking sunglasses: Shades are more than just a fashion statement. Choose sunglasses that block 100% of UV rays and provide sufficient protection from the sun.
- Sunscreen: According to the American Academy of Dermatology, everybody should be wearing a broad-spectrum sunblock rated with an SPF of 30 or greater. Apply a sufficient amount, often, particularly after swimming.
- Lip balm: I always find my lips and face to be wind-burned after a day at the beach, so I always carry a moisturizing lip balm with SPF to protect them from the sun and elements.
- Wide-brimmed hat: Now that we know a thing or two about the sun’s rays, the chic, protective accessory you want to be wearing is a chic summer hat. Opt for one that has a wide brim and can offer some additional protection from the sun’s rays.
- Deodorant: There is something about the ocean air (the salt perhaps) that always makes me feel like I need to take a shower. Fortunately,
