I was the girl who would spend hours in her room singing and dancing to Christian Pop music, dreaming of the day I’d be the one performing on the cassette tape (a product of the 80’s). To say that I love music doesn’t fully describe the emotions that the combination of vocals, rhythm, and harmony evoke. My father always had music playing in the background, and I attribute my love of it to him. As a country music enthusiast, he dreamed of visiting “Music City,” and while we never made the trip, we’d often visit local venues to hear popular and up-and-coming artists perform on weekends and holidays.
As we approach the 4th of July weekend, it seems natural for me to want to seek out the familiarity of my childhood. I can’t imagine a celebration without music, and for many artists, this is how they celebrate our country’s Independence. If my father were still here and we lived near Bentonville, Arkansas, I know that we’d be headed to the city’s 4th of July Fireworks Celebration. Held annually at Orchards Park, families will enjoy a special concert by 19-year-old Country Singer/Songwriter Kaylee Rutland.
Originally from Texas, Rutland’s love for music began at the age of 6. At 8, while singing in her church’s kids’ choir, she sang a solo during a Christmas musical and knew that music would become her life. For such a young woman, she is very accomplished and gleans inspiration from God, her family and friends, what she does and doesn’t have and what she dreams about. I think her maturity is best reflected when she says, “My take on all things in life is to always do my best and let God do the rest!”
