Eight years ago, I sat inside our local library in Edinburgh searching for any information I could find about the safety of the products we were using to clean our flat. I was just 2 months pregnant with my son and my goal was to do everything I could to have the healthiest pregnancy and delivery possible. Information about the safety and sustainability of foods, cleaning supplies, and personal care products was minimal at that time, which inspired me to write about these topics online. Today, “green” companies abound and the greater challenges include finding affordable products that are good for our family and good for the environment.
The Walmart Sustainability Leaders Shop
The Walmart Sustainability Leaders Shop is my new go-to for finding affordable products made by companies who are leaders in the area of sustainability. If you visit Walmart.com, you’ll find over 10,000 such products scoring “best in class” via Walmart’s Sustainability Index. This tool gathers and analyzes information related to each participating supplier’s approach to monitoring and managing their social and environmental impact through the full lifecycle of their products. It was developed in partnership with The Sustainability Consortium, an independent, nonprofit organization that collaborates with more than 100 product manufacturers, nonprofits and academic researchers to create science-based measurement tools. You can read more about how the Sustainability Index is used to score these products by visiting WalmartSustainabilityHub.com.
How to Identify Sustainable Products and What Does the Distinction Mean?
When you shop online, you’ll find that every product that “makes the sustainability grade” can be identified by it’s Sustainability Leaders Badge. One of your first questions might be, “How much more will I pay for this item?” The good news is that the prices of these items remains unchanged and with Walmart’s everyday low price guarantee, you know that you’ll always receive the best price on your purchases.
It should be noted that The Sustainability Leaders Badge does not make statements about the environmental or social impact of an individual product, rather identifies the manufacturer as a leader across all of the products they make in that category.
Here is a short video detailing How The Sustainability Leaders Shop Works:
Products can be found in one of eight categories including grocery, baby, health & beauty, and electronics. The number of products available is broad and expansive and I found myself surprised to see major brands like hp, P&G, Unilever, and General Mills leading in the area of sustainability. I would love to see this eventually translated to local Walmart stores (perhaps an identifying sticker or placard near the product?).
