5 Things You Can Do Tonight For a Successful Tomorrow

Even with two alarms set, there are days when I sleep so soundly, only my internal clock notifies me that I should be up making breakfast, packing lunches and preparing my kids’ outfits.  No matter how early I wake up in the morning, most days I still find myself rushing to get out of the house on time to ensure my son isn’t late for school. Because of my tendency to run late, I started doing much of my morning prep the night before in order to focus my mornings on the most important activities like getting dressed and eating breakfast.

When we prepare for the tomorrow, I find that the overall mood in our home is calmer, and items and tasks don’t get forgotten, making it more likely that each of us will have a great start to our day. There are several easy ways to prepare for tomorrow that don’t take a lot of time or effort. And if your kids are old enough, I encourage you to include them in your nighttime preparation to role model positive character traits like responsibility.

1.  Make a list. Making lists helps to organize my thoughts and enables me to get as much accomplished as possible. If there are specific tasks that must be accomplished each morning, make a list and post it in a visible location.

2. Pick out clothes and put together outfits the night before. One of my new challenges is my daughter’s increasing affinity towards fashion. Involving her and allowing her to make decisions helps minimize misbehavior, but doing so takes time which is why we strive to finalize the next day’s outfit the night before.

3. Make and pack lunches the night before. My son prefers hot lunches which requires making these dishes the night before so that they can easily be reheated in the morning. I also pack all of his other times in his lunch box and then place it in the refrigerator so I’m not scrambling in the morning. Planning meals in the evening will also help you determine if you’re out of your son’s favorite snack or your daughter’s favorite juice, saving you a morning visit to the grocery store.

4.  Pack backpacks, sports bags, and any other items needed for extracurricular activities. Looking for things that have gone missing often accounts for much of the time lost in the morning.  Having everything packed and ready by the front door ensures that nothing is forgotten (which can contribute to significant amounts of time lost in the morning).

5. Plan for breakfast in the evening. Breakfast has always been a priority in our home and a meal we never miss. While I don’t often have time for elaborate dishes like omelets and pancakes, it’s easy to set out a box of cereal, a bowl and a spoon the night before so that each of my kids can even prepare their own breakfast if necessary.  Hard boil eggs and cut-up fruit can also be prepped the night before to serve with cereal for a complete meal along with Kellogg’s Raisin Bran or Special K which includes important nutrients like protein and grains.

By taking  just a few minutes to prepare the night before your big day, you’ll set yourself up for a successful tomorrow. For more tips on starting your day off right, visit Kelloggs.com.
