Earlier this week, I went through my bathroom cupboards in an effort to do some early Spring Cleaning. I unknowingly collect all types of beauty products and then later ask myself why I have items that are mostly untouched and unused. While these products aren’t as perishable as say medications, I still find that over time, beauty products lose their effectiveness which is one more compelling reason to weed through them regularly. As I was gathering a box of items to be thrown out, I noticed that many of the bottles had a recycle symbol. We recycle as much as we can each week so I’ve gotten very familiar with the items that can and cannot be placed in that bin, but this was a surprise to me.
Last year, Johnson & Johnson launched their Care to Recycle campaign in an effort to raise awareness about recycling personal care products in the bathroom. Through their research, they found that only 1 in 5 Americans recycle in the bathroom, which means these items are ending up in landfills. Most of us know that plastic bottles, aluminum cans, and paper products can all be recycled. Care to Recycle, which lives on Tumblr, is a highly resourceful site where families can learn more about which specific personal care products can be recycled.
How to Recycle Bathroom Products:
It’s actually easier than you think! Here are a few tips to get you started:
1. Have a separate or divided bin dedicated to recyclables in your bathroom
2. Know which plastics can be recycled (Plastic bottles marked #1 (PETE) and #2 (HDPE))
3. Rinse bottles before recycling (this can be done quickly) but leave the caps on (it isn’t necessary to remove them before recycling)
4. Don’t worry about removing labels before recycling
5. Don’t forget about pill bottles and medicine containers, many of which are recyclable. And to dispose of your old, unused medications properly, visit fda.gov
Given the growing concern about landfills, the National Recycling Coalition initiated America Recycles Day to raise awareness and encourage Americans to recycle and purchase recycled products. Celebrated annually on November 15th, this is the only nationally recognized day dedicated to recycling. If you’ve yet to start recycling in your home, this is the perfect opportunity to do so.
In advance of America Recycles Day, Care to Recycle launched a hashtag gallery on the website. If you visit the site, you can use the hashtag #CareToRecycle and #entry to submit your own bathroom recycling tips, tricks, and DIY projects on Twitter, Instagram, Vine or the website. Your post/content may be featured on Care to Recycle plus you’ll have an opportunity to win a prize pack from Johnson & Johnson.
When we started recycling bathroom products, I simply set aside a small bin that was separate from the trash as a reminder not to throw away those products. If you’re looking for a more chic way to do this, Recyclebank offers some tips on making your trash look classy!
