School is in full-swing, and while Summer feels like a distant memory, we’re still relishing in Southern California’s warm Fall weather. Our weekends our filled with soccer, play-dates and adventures in the city, and with those activities come the need for refreshing snacks! My kids enjoy Popsicles year-round, and with all of the exciting flavors and character-inspired varieties, we can’t get enough of these icy sweet treats.
One of the things my kids love to do after they’ve enjoyed a Popsicle is to read the joke printed on the stick before throwing them away. But with all of the Popsicles we consume, I started brainstorming ideas for what to do with popsicle sticks. Since Halloween is just a few weeks away, I gleaned inspiration from Popsicle’s website and recreated their Popsicle Stick Monster Puppets! What’s nice about this particular project is that even younger kids can get involved with painting and glueing.
Here is what you’ll need for these not-too-spooky DIY Popsicle Stick Monster Puppets:
- 20 Popsicle Sticks
- Glue (I like to use Tacky Glue since it is a very versatile crafting glue)
- Paint (I use Acrylic Paint which can be used on any surface)
- Black Marker
- Mini Wiggly Eyes
- Scissors
- Paper
- Glue 2 popsicle sticks together and repeat until you have 10 sets of 2
- Glue popsicle sticks into the configuration above
- Paint the popsicle sticks once the glue has dried
- Cut out scary mouths for each Popsicle Stick Monster Puppet and draw in the teeth
- Glue the mouths and the wiggly eyes on to each Popsicle Stick Monster Puppet
- Cut a paper ring wide enough to go around both parts of your Popsicle Stick Monster Puppet
- Once the glue has dried, your Popsicle Stick Monster Puppet is ready for his/her monstrous show!
My kids had a TON of fun working on this project and we liked that it was straightforward and didn’t take a lot of time to complete. We tapped into our creativity a bit by altering the configuration of our monsters’ eyes, but in the future we might plan to alter their mouths as well.
A few months back, Popsicle launched their Rules For Being A Kid Guidebook, which features 40 of the brand’s favorites from reader submissions. The guidebook is a valuable resource and offers families printable games, activities, crafts and coloring pages designed to inspire togetherness and allow children to “be a kid!”
Even in the midst of a busy school year, I pause to spend time doing things that my kids enjoy such as baking and crafting together, kicking a soccer ball around our local park, or going on local adventures in our city.
