As I was busy settling my kids in for their first week of school, Walmart was already announcing the debut of it’s 2014 Layaway program, and it hit me that the start of school means the countdown to Christmas. My kids always have elaborate wish lists, which means if I wait, the season’s Top Toys will likely be sold out.
Shopping early makes sense both logistically and financially, since the burden of spending a large amount of money in a short period of time can cause unnecessary stress during a time that should be filled with joy and family togetherness. When Walmart brought layaway back 3 years ago, it changed the way its customers shopped during the holiday season. Layaway helps ensure families gift the items they really want without having to worry that those items will sell out, and gives them budgeting options to avoid spending a large chunk of money in a single transaction.
How to put items on layaway at Walmart:
1. Visit the Walmart.com Services Desk at your local Walmart store with items in any one of the following categories: electronics, auto electronics, large furniture, infant furniture, infant toys, toys, select sporting goods, small appliances and jewelry.
2. Items can be placed on layaway through December 15th and must be paid on or before that date
3. In order to place an item on layaway, you’ll need to place a down payment of either $10 or 10% of the cost of your purchase, whichever is greater (there is no opening fee to place an item on layaway at Walmart)
4. Each item must be at least $15 and the total purchase must be $50 or greater
5. Payments can be made at any register, but the final payment must be made and the item picked up on or before December 15th, 2014
6. If you wish to cancel your item, your down payment and any payments made will be refunded minus a $10 cancellation fee
While I can see myself putting all types of gifts on layaway, big ticket items like those in electronics seem to make the most sense, particularly if those items are anticipated to sell out during the holiday season. In anticipation of the 2014 holiday season, I’ve put together a list of the seasons top electronics for kids:
I’m currently in Bentonville with Walmart learning all about the exciting new initiatives that will launch for the holiday season. Layaway is just one of the many things Walmart will offer throughout the season to help its customers get the most value for their money as well as streamline the process of holiday shopping.
