A couple of years ago, we stood in line for nearly 4 hours to purchase tickets to what proved to be one of my all-time favorite musicals. ONCE the Muscial debuted at the New York Theatre Workshop in 2011 before selling out to audiences on Broadway in 2012. With 11 Tony Award nominations, 8 Tony Awards (Best Musical, Best Actor), the 2012 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical and the 2013 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album, ONCE is hands-down one of the most beautiful and uniquely artistic productions I’ve seen to date.
When I first learned that ONCE would be continuing it’s tour in Southern California, I vowed to get tickets! Without giving too much away, the musical was adapted from the 2006 film of the same name and tells the story of an Irish musician and a Czech immigrant who are drawn to each other by their shared love of music. Over the course of one week, their friendship evolves into a powerful but complicated love story.
One of the things you’ll immediately notice as the show opens is that the cast plays the dual role of the orchestra. The set, while minimal in appearance, was designed to resemble an Irish Pub, and allows audiences to fully engage with the actors/musicians as their songs are showcased onstage. ONCE stars Stuart Ward and Dani de Waal as “Guy” and “Girl,” and tells their enduring love story about pursuing your dreams, not being afraid to live, and the power music has to connect us.
ONCE will run for a limited time at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts August 19th through 31st Tuesday through Friday at 7:30 pm, Saturday at 2pm and 7:30 pm, and Sunday at 1 and 6:30 pm. Ticket prices start at just $25 each and can be purchased at the box office or online at SCFTA.org.
