I have this amazing friend from India, who often invites us over for dinner. Not only does she share my passion for healthy food, she infuses creativity and the flavors of her family’s culture into each of her dishes. During one of our afternoon get-togethers, she served a homemade hummus that was absolutely delightful. Not only was it smooth, rich, and bold in flavor, it was fresh and made with just a handful of ingredients. Hummus isn’t a dish I had ever considered making from scratch, but after experiencing my friend’s homemade Red Pepper Hummus with fresh Indian Chapati, I decided I had to endeavor at least once to make her recipe at home. With Walmart continuing to expand it’s line of Wild Oats products, I thought that now was the perfect time to incorporate them into this dish!
Last month, Walmart began its rollout of Wild Oats Organic and Natural Products. The partnership between Walmart and Wild Oats will give families access to an exclusive line of affordable organic and natural products. With it’s reputation and longevity as a pioneer in the natural and organics sector, Wild Oats provides a transparent list of 125 ingredients you’ll never see in their Marketplace and Marketplace Organic foods. At present, you’ll primarily find packaged/jarred products such as salsa, pasta, quinoa, rice, canned beans, spices, ready-to-prepare skillet meals, and chicken broth. But as Walmart continues to expand it’s selection to approximately 100 products across 4,000 stores, families will see additional products such as cereal, applesauce, flax seed, and coconut oil all at prices at least 25 percent less (and in many instances the savings is greater) than national organic brands.
I have 3 different Walmart locations within the vicinity of my home and was able to pick up a handful of products including Organic Garbanzo Beans to recreate my friend’s Red Pepper Hummus Recipe. While the selection is still sparse, every week you’ll find me scouring the store shelves to see what Wild Oats products I can find!
What I LOVE about this recipe is that it uses a ton of fresh veggies, packs in a significant amount of protein, and is incredibly easy to make as long as you have a food processor. All of the ingredients (including the Tahini!) were purchased at my local Walmart. If you can’t find Tahini, try looking in the Ethnic Foods section which is where I found it at my local store.
Here is the recipe for Red Pepper Hummus:
- 1 can of Wild Oats Marketplace Organic Garbanzo Beans drained and rinsed
- 1/4 cup tahini
- Juice of 1 lemon seeded
- 2 Tbs Olive Oil
- 3 cloves of garlic minced
- 1/2 tsp cumin
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 red bell pepper coarsely chopped
- 1/2 red onion coarsely chopped
- Paprika for garnish
-
Using a food processor, combine tahini and lemon juice until smooth (be sure to scrape down the sides of the bowl)
-
Add olive oil, garlic, and spices and continue to process
-
Add garbanzo beans and continue to process
-
Add red pepper and onion and process until smooth
-
Serve with pita chips or Chapati with a dash of paprika
I love how easy this recipe was to recreate! It’s bold in flavor and has just the slightest “kick,” although if you really want to spice it up, you might include Cayenne or Red Pepper. Traditionally, I soak and cook my own beans, but I loved how convenient it was to use Wild Oats Marketplace Organic Beans. Since this was the first time making hummus, I thought I’d offer a few tips for success, particularly if you like your hummus smooth like the one you might purchase at your local Walmart.
1. Be sure to mix the Tahini well before measuring it. I ended up processing the whole thing and then using only what I needed since the consistency resembles that of peanut butter.
2. Since consistency is key, you might opt to cut your vegetables smaller so that the food processor purees them with the remainder of the ingredients.
3. If you’re still struggling with consistency, Inspired Taste recommends adding a small amount of water (1 tablespoon at a time) until your hummus is smooth.
4. For a bolder flavor, try roasting the red pepper.
Homemade Hummus is SO easy to make at home! And once Walmart expands their offering of Wild Oats products, you’ll be able to purchase the brand’s very own Olive Oil and spices to use in this recipe. You can read more about the brand on the Wild Oats Blog.
Shopping for organics used to be cost-prohibitive. I love that Walmart is working to ensure that its customers save money AND live better by providing access to affordable organic and natural foods. If you can’t wait for your store to offer Wild Oats products, visit Walmart.com/WildOats. I was able to find over 50 items that can be ordered right now!
